If I remember correctly, Hexy was the reason the Flyers got away from the big, physical plug mindset.

Burke has said multiple times, Hextall will make the personnel decisions. I don't think Burke will force Hexy's hands on players he doesn't want.

Burke also said he wants skilled players, and Risto isn't skilled lol

I think Suter is a good target to go after if they can dump one of Matheson or Petts. Suter might make a good partner for Marino.

Suter would be an incredible get. I'd guess he'd go to a top contender to chase a Cup, but I'd put in a call. Not really clearing up our LD log jam, but he's still a good player and guys coming off buyouts tend to come at a nice discount.

Like I said before, he's either going to chase Cups or chase paychecks. He'll either sign at the fairest a top tier contender is willing to go, or he'll sign a stupid contract from a stupid GM who thinks their team is just a Suter away from making a Cup run. We're neither high end Cup contenders or can afford to dump money at him, so I don't think he's an option.

I guess we had a legit run at signing him way back in the day, so maybe he's intrigued by Pittsburgh, but I think that's a long shot.

Erik Johnson has waived his NMC for the expansion draft. I wonder what the Pens could offer the Avs to retain 50% on him.

I'm not saying they couldn't use that element. I just don't believe the Pens lost against the Isle because of it.

It absolutely would be nice to have a big tough D who can also play. Those guys being mentioned aren't that. They're JJ's with a little more nasty.

- madmike71

Well if all we wanted to do was fix what went wrong against the Isles, we could leave it at goal-tending. So I agree, just want to go further. That might have stuck out as a problem if Lee had been in front of our net

Also agree a lot of the guys being mentioned aren't good targets. It's a puzzle getting the defense remade with Marino, Matheson, and POJ as assumed 3/4 of the bottom 4

Exactly. I think he realizes his reputation. His last interview pretty much alleviated my concerns. He wants to add a little size, but not getting away from skill and speed. He emphatically said the Penguins game is speed and skill.

I agree with your either or scenario. My guess is usually the guy who has been paid well but without a Cup chases the Cup.

That's why I'd expect a guy like Rust who has 2 Cups and been underpaid to look to cash in next off-season.

I was surprised he waived, but I don't think they want to move him. They were faced with losing a guy like Timmons and he helped them out. Wouldn't be surprised if they made a side deal that was less expensive then for Timmons.

JMO, Pens could have gone to the ECF with a better tender. I don't think anyone was beating Tampa.

It's a fair point however. Some holes/wants are gonna be easier to patch than others. Tending is my #1 wish. Bigger RW for Sid's line would be my #2. Tough physical D would be my #3.

Tatar 5v5 goal differential in the playoffs: even

Tanev 5v5 goal differential in the playoffs: -9

- Feds91Stammer

Those two could play for every coach in the AHL and NHL and Tatar comes out of the lineup before Tanev every time. It’s his role. Play ok for a little bit then get scratched because he sucks.

Regardless on whether they want to move him, maybe a trade makes sense instead of losing him for nothing because I'd think he instantly becomes a high probability for Seattle.

That would be an interesting get. I'd be much more interested in another Avalanche player if there was any remote possibility Landeskog doesn't re-sign with the Avs.

Honestly I think the Penguins are in a position where they should try to shed a few contracts & be aggressive in free agency. We don't really have the trade assets. (only other option is a big/impactful hockey trade... like Guentzel for Bertuzzi or whatever).

Now more than ever it makes sense to sign a Coleman or Saad, even if it's a slight overpay, rather than wasting future assets for players that barely upgrade the current roster.
