You don't think Rust and Pettersson are worth a 2nd and 3rd?
I'm just looking at the bigger picture if Rust walks for nothing next year.

- nateca444

Sure they might be worth those, but you aren't getting anyone better than Rust or Petterson for a 2nd or 3rd and you're likely not getting anyone better than Rust in FA.

Trading Petts to make room for POJ makes sense in theory, but POJ wasn't exactly good last season in his limited time up, but that would free up cap space to go shopping in FA. If Zucker goes in expansion as everyone seems to be eluding to, his cap/Petts cap is plenty (Capfriendly projecting 3m in space right now, plus Petts+Zuck's 5.5+4.025 would be 12.525m to make a run for Saad, and to resign Blueg and ZAR.

isn't a bad start for the forwards, if the money is right.

Good Gawd, The 3rd the Oilers added in the Keith trade is a conditional 3rd

It becomes a 2nd if the Oilers make it to the Conference Final

So, now the Oil can't trade their 2nd if they wanted to because it's locked out

Jeezus, what a bad deal

Dream scenario...

Trade John Marino for Ristolainen and a 2nd round pick.
Trade Pettersson and a 3rd to LA for Maata and Kupari.
Buy out Maata ($1M cap impact this year).
Sign Suter 3x$2.5.
Resign Ceci 3x$2.5.

The Buffalo second is basically a 1st and Kupari is a nice center prospect we currently don't have.

Tatar playoff stats. 40 games 6 goals.
Tanev playoff stats. 32 games 6 goals.
If moving Tanev helps the team sign Ryan Getzlaf I’m all for it. If you’re moving him to sign a lesser Rust and a worse Tanev then nah.

Read a few rumor sites which had us tied to Calle Jarnkrok from Nashville.

I think he'd be a good fit for the Pens. He doesn't fit the long pants mold, but he does fit C/W mold that Hextall also mentioned he likes to have. Getting someone like him would allow McCann to play next to Geno.

Did they mention what the return would look like?

Terrible moves although I do envision Hextall going after Risto, but not at that cost.

If we're trying to stay within the realms of reality and based on what others have brought up I think the following kind of fits the Hextall narrative a bit...

I also assumed no change in goal and left room for guys like Poulin and Zohorna.

A second pair of Suter-Risto is WAY better than a second pair of Petts-Marino... not even close. Add to that we get a top prospect in Kupari and Buffalo's second which is technically a first since Zona doesnt have a pick.

No brainer moves for Pittsburgh though I have a hard time believing we could get LA and Buffalo to bite on those deals.

Look, I’m not trying to act like I’m great at trade proposals, but I just think you don’t get the concept of asset management.

Also, Risto is a fraction of the quality of Marino.

Marino is incredibly vanilla and on a very long contract that I don't think he will deliver much value on. Put Risto with Matheson and it will be a disaster (then again it was with Marino too) but if you can get someone really solid and smart like Suter opposite him and he could be a huge asset on the blueline.

Risto will produce more offence and will make life difficult for the other team's forwards. Marino=Pettersson=Maata > just incredibly vanilla and replaceable players.

Also... 1. I like some of your trade proposals, though Risto will cost way more than that. 2. Since when is getting players that improve the team now while also getting top draft picks and prospects bad asset management?

Risto sucks.

If Pettersson isn’t any good how the (frank) does he return Kupari?

Risto's really (frank)ing bad at hockey. People need to stop bringing him up lest we manifest him onto this team.

If I'm stuck with Matheson (we are), I'm trying to keep Ceci. I thought Ceci did a nice job of covering for MM when he did something dumb.

I think Marino will have a bounce back. In my general opinion, Marino was trying to do to much last year......maybe because his GM said he is a #1 type D (he clearly is not).

I think people overestimate what BUF's return will be for Risto. He's far removed from the shine of being a top ten pick. Seven seasons in and everyone around the league see exactly what he is and he's on the fast track to JJ Land. I'll be shocked if he gets anything more than a third rounder in return.

Marino is not vanilla. He may not be flashy, but that doesn't mean he's vanilla and despite a dip in offense this year he focused on being solid in his own end. I think this coming season we will see exactly what he's made of and I believe his production will increase now that he's figuring it all out.

I don't bring him up out of want. I bring him up because he seems like the Hextall type of dman. I think ultimately either Risto or Zadorov are Penguins by the start of next season.

I pray Hextall doesn't go after Risto or Zadorov. I just expect it. We have to expect for whatever wise moves he makes, if any, he desires to have a certain type of player on this team and will try to make that happen.

We can all decide to live in a bubble, only propose moves that we perceive as the right moves and ignore the realities of GM's making inevitable questionable moves or we can realize these questionable moves will happen. GM's all have their agendas. I find it funny how people on here sometimes have a hard time separating the two and think if you propose a trade for a bad player it means you must want that bad player, not that you expect your GM to make a bad move.
