Overall our scouting department seems plenty good, although I would take a stab at one of Nashvilles defensive scouts (or are they just darn good at developing they're D men) Philly overall, when looking at "Hit" or "Miss" have a fine record, I won't take the Nolan Patrick stuff, He was absolutely the 2nd pick and i would expect most every other team would have done the same in Phillys shoes. He was consensus number 2, and some still thought NJD were taking him 1st overall. - GPerogie
Not disputing what you say at all, but what is your measure for this?
I posted a couple of weeks ago a list of post 1st round best picks by team. Made a mistake about Kadri (read down for correction) but point is Flyers seem pretty average to below average.
https://www.hockeybuzz.co...post_id=21573050#21573050
Of course, Flyers tend to pick mid to late first, where they have probably had a pretty decent record. But Of the top of my head, their record seems about average to me. |

Amazing.
The only way out of this logjam is to actually incentivize winning. Losing has an incentive in getting high picks. There is no inbuilt incentive in doing really well AT ALL.
There should be a financial structure like: winner of cup doesn't pay into revenue sharing pool for that year, or something even stronger. - PT21

I suspect that the talented ones probably leave the field. Would you want to stay in a place where you might be twice as talented as the hack next to you in your evaluation and assessment, and yet there is no recognition for it? - PT21
Two of the guys I know the best have HUGE ego’s …these guys aren’t wall flower types . They are both hockey lifers and understand how it works….these jobs are fairly hard to come by. There is a lot of cross scouting (at least before Covid)….so sometimes there’s a lot of consensus. Most feel lucky to have these gigs. Your right though that some guys move on because they probably don’t feel appreciated with their recommendations but that’s a card you can only play so often before there’s no openings for you left. |

Jay is the real deal, give him one more season at BU and then you will see him on the Flyers in 2023. - jd250
hopefully he signs here and doesnt go kalynuk. That pisses me off losing them for nothing, should either have their rights an extra year, or get compensation

I think fans expecting Seattle to take JVR or JV without any compensation to do so are dreaming. There will be 6-10 players in the category of those 2 that teams are looking to dump their salaries. Seattle will have their choice of which couple to take to reach CAP floor and it will be the best deal not necessarily the best players that they choose - hfc355
Like Who?
JVR is a 20-30 goal scorer, Voracek is a 60 point guy. Where you going to find those types of players in the Expansion Draft? Who are these 6-10 players that are at the level of these guys?

If it was all luck, you would not even have a draft order. Teams could just put names in a hat and draw them. Just saying. - PT21
All Luck was an exaggeration but just because its luck doesnt mean they wouldnt have rankings.
Teams are ranked before the season and people are guessing whos winning the cup long before the season even starts. Everyone also has their own system that they believe gives them an edge
Fantasy hockey ranks players and that is 90% luck

It's the points to $ ratio that counts though, isn't it?
But otherwise, Duchene? Gourde? Donskoi? |

Interesting. Maybe they don't really have other options. That could be one explanation. But I would have thought that these guys with egos etc would also bemoan that their worth is diluted because they have to share credit with other, less insightful guys etc. |

Chicago is going to be major players for Jones now after acquiring his brother. |

I've said it before on here, but the Flyers need a major overhaul in their scouting department. - KGBflyers10
Maybe Scouting and Development? The Flyers have produced about 3 elite players in the last 15 drafts. Giroux, Van Riemsdyk (a bit of a stretch) and Couturier. I don't see how their scouts are envied throughout the NHL. |

Maybe the envy or respect has little to do with job performance. Maybe it just comes from working for an organization that treats them well, a financially stable franchise etc. |

Id rather have JVR or Voracek over Duchene. He hasnt been relevant since leaving OTT
Gourde and Donskoi can play multiple positions and their cap hit is low. Doesnt really affect whether or not they should take JVR or Voracek. Seattle would be more likely to select those guys and flip them.

It just seems like a field where job performance of an individual is hard to tease out. Maybe such things are not even valued and everybody thinks its all one hot, random mess.
Like the police department in my place of work (an university). Nobody really cares about skill there nor is there a huge deal to worry about. They protect mollycoddled kids.
Its a nice steady job. Great benefits. The actual police envy them.

Haven'e been aware of him for a while. Played for CBJ and Preds, two defensive oriented teams which struggle to generate offense right? Could be an artefact of that.
I wonder what Hapstol thought of the two (Voracek and JVR). That would surely play a big part. |

Seattle is not going to pass up a chance to get JVR for nothing, I think its a pipe dream to think Seattle would waste their pick on a player like Haag or Braun. They are taking one of Ghost, JVR or Jake, with JVR the most likely pick. - jd250
Absolutely they are. Even if Jake is too high priced to keep him they can flip him to a cup team while retaining a few million at the trade deadline and get a first+ for him. It's a win/win for them to take Jake, imo |
