Status quo. Sure he will have a good season and we just miss playoffs or worse get bounced first round. Middle of the pact. Should be exciting - Stayin alive

No matter what core one talks about it isn't good enough. Not even close. - hello it's me 2050
No, they’re certainly not ready. That’s evident.
I was just commenting on who I felt the core was. |

Acquiring Jones without a commitment for a new contract is very dangerous. Yes, there is the option of trading him at the deadline if he doesn't re-sign. What if the team is in a strong playoff spot? You're going to trade a top pairing defenseman at the deadline? Without a commitment to re-signing, Jones is a no go. |

Yep. You are trading for Jones to improve the team and if you aren't in the playoffs solidly at the deadline it was a colossal waste of assets. And if you are in a solid playoff spot or close you cant trade him at the deadline either.
He has to be willing to resign or you simply don't make the deal.

Understood. Not sure that core will ever be good enough. Good players yes. |

Agree. That being said I can easily see the GM buckling and making a deal without an extension.

There are plenty of teams that are going to expose a good defenseman in the expansion draft. Maybe not a young upcoming defenseman, but some slightly aged good defensemen. Maybe a deal could be done to trade for one of those and you won't have to sell the farm for them. |

I would imagine they would prefer to send jake to the western conference in any trade. - Peter Richards

Thanks bill.
This will be an interesting summer.

Why would they care where they trade him to? If that is even a concern whoever thinks that should be fired asap.

First of all, there's a significant cap difference between two years of remaining term for a 29 year old versus three years of remaining term for a 31 year old. The $750,000 cap savings the next two seasons isn't huge but it isn't nothing, either.
Secondly, if Tarasenko is even reasonably healthy over the next two seasons, you're getting a better player than pretty much anyone else you could realistically get for Voracek. If he's not healthy, well, you lose the trade hockey wise but you do get potentially a big chunk of LTIR flexibility if you run into cap ceiling trouble.
Now, regarding Flyers cap space. Hart does not have arbitration rights this offseason. He will absolutely get a bridge deal and a raise but probably not a huge raise until he is re-established. Sanheim's contract is the trickier one.
It's simply untrue that the "Flyers have no space to do anything." They enter the offseason with about $13M of cap space. Let's say Ghost is the guy they lose in the Expansion Draft. That's another $4.5 million. With $17.5 M or so, they can resign their RFAs, and make a couple of NHL acquisitions including addressing the top pairing.
Lastly, the Jones pursuit hasn't necessarily fallen apart so much as being off the front burner for now. And if it's not him, it still may very well be another expensive blueline addition instead. - bmeltzer
If the Krakens dont take Ghost? or Vora? or JVR or any other player with a large contract, we are back where we started at having no cap space, you have to hope and pray they can make a trade to free up space, none of which is guaranteed or probable.
You cant forget next off season where Couts is going to want a massive pay raise and what you do with G... sorry, I have zero interest in Tarasenko or Jones at any price.
I also dont want to just trade for a high priced Dman just to say we over spent for a high priced player, because that is exactly how it feels to me.

I'm going to miss Giroux, but I'm thrilled knowing he is coming off the books after next season. |

all luck - hello it's me 2050
Luck certainly played a big part. But not as big as what it would need to play if the Flyers had been the ones drafting. And that difference is what we should be concerned about.
The reporter forgot Killorn btw.
And there was a name in the replies I had never heard of: Judd Brackett, who apparentlt had considerable success drafting for Canucks, and is only 43, and had personaity clashes with Jim Benning and left Canucks, and was promptly picked up by the Wild. I found at least 2 major news sports news outlets covering this hire, one of which is here:
https://thehockeywriters....ild-judd-brackett-hiring/
In the meantime, our equivalent director of Scouting is Dave Brown? Who has been with us in a senior role since 2006? What has the guy done? Why did he get the job besides having the ties of being an enforcer for the Flyers? What is his accountability? How is his reputation in the league for this position?
Folks who bemoan the status of the Flyers, look at key behind the scene issues like this. Very possibly, therein lies the root of decay. |

Dude, Flyers had Chris Pryor in charge of the draft for years. He was an outside hire.
And Brown is head of pro scouting. He's not watching amateurs. |

Speaking of decay, this is not correct. Dave Brown's title is listed as Head Pro scout. Pro scouts don't scout amateur players. The Flyers director of scouting is Assistant GM Brent Flahr. Bill has spoken about him in many blogs.
If every viewpoint you have about a team or an organization is pessimistic, this is where mistakes like this come from. |
