The Athletic just put out a piece on the Canuckleheads if anyones interested...here's a small portion of it.

Available Cap Space and the Pettersson, Hughes effect

The Canucks have limited cap flexibility this offseason anyway, but exactly how much wiggle room they’ll possess will be entirely dependent on the term, treasure and timing of Elias Pettersson’s and Quinn Hughes’ second contracts.

Pettersson and Hughes, who are both represented by CAA, and the Canucks have been working on this for a while. Talks have been productive, but it would be somewhat surprising at this juncture if the club were able to get extensions done for both players prior to the July 17 roster freeze.

Functionally those contracts are going to take up the majority of Vancouver’s available cap space this offseason.

Modelling out Vancouver’s available cap space with more precision requires us to make a few key assumptions — a buyout for Jake Virtanen, Loui Eriksson’s salary buried below the line in the American League, Micheal Ferland on LTIR but not Jay Beagle, the bonus overage from Nils Höglander and Hughes’ performance bonuses — which brings us to an estimate of roughly $22.3 million in space with 14 players signed.

Even on bridge deals for Pettersson and Hughes, the club will need to earmark $14-15 million for those players in the event that Pettersson’s deal in particular isn’t done before July 28 — since he’s eligible for an offer sheet and Hughes isn’t.

The club’s available cap room is severely limited, which doesn’t leave the Canucks with a ton of great options for upgrading their roster in trades or free agency. Buyouts could help — a buyout of Braden Holtby’s deal would give the club a short-term infusion of $3.8 million in cap space, although it comes at the expense of their flexibility in 2022-23 — although, in truth, there are only really two contracts on Vancouver’s books (Holtby, Virtanen) that make practical sense to buyout at all.

If the club hopes to have the sort of aggressive offseason that could jumpstart a rebuilding effort that looked derailed through wide swaths of the 2021 campaign, finding ways to reallocate cap space on the trade market over the next two weeks will be an essential first step.

I remember hearing Pierre call out the schneider trade at the draft and saying it was major heist by new jersey. Or when Montreal drafted Carey price and said it was a bad move cause they had two good goalies already lol.

Only 3, 4 if you count Getzlaf, have the heft that Benning might be looking for and 2 others( Schmaltz and Kerfoot) are very expensive for 3rd line centre.
