30th pick overall would not a be completly aberrant evaluation of the value of Chiarot or Allen in a trade, imo. Their contracts are reasonable for what they provide. - Réal_Ruelle
Got Allen for a 3rd a year ago. One year of Chiarot isn't worth a 1st in my eyes, not even close and would likely just delay Romanov's growth.
Picm a scoring W or a RD and continue to develop the youth. If needed hit trade or FA for replacements |

Chiarot has one year left and a lot of fans want a PMD. You need to free up some $$$ and a spot to do that.
I see your logic but Vegas became a contender because teams kept dealing with them. I wouldn't. - deadpoulet
I wouldn't protect Weber given his age and 8M$ cap space.... |

Our 3500 at their quietest were louder than most US arenas. Sad but true. It brings to light the saying that in Montreal you don't just become a hockey fan. It's a religion. And we are some zealous mother(frank)ers! - Darksyde
It's a double edged sword but yeah, pretty much |

I think we're losing Chiarot.
He's the most valuable guy for Seattle, both on the ice and on what he could fetch if they end up trading him. - Scabeh
I think so. Vegas went heavy with defensemen. He's a good pick for them.
Allen is great back up, but just a back up. I think they will have other options there. |

Bergevin or Molson won't do this.
But I see your point. |

The 3rd for Allen was because it was a cap dump and sincerly, i thought Ben Chiarot's game in these playoffs (except the brain fart in game 2 of the final) have been underestimated a bit. The problem is 1 year left, because I think he is better than Edmunson. |

I mean, with this 8M$, they could try and get Seth Jones or Dougie Hamilton...or sign David Savard to replace the physicality of Weber and add a more offensive defenseman... |

Habs need a puck carrying defenseman that can contribute offensively. You can't just have Petry out there. I know Weber can produce, but age is getting to him and there is no guarantee.
They also need a legit 2nd line center. I don't know if Kotkaniemi can be that already, he's showing some flashes...I've been defending him a lot, but he needs to take a huge step next season. |

If Colorado is looking to trade Samuel Girard, he'd be my target. |

Edmundson-Petry
Romanov-Weber
Kulak-Fleury ?
I think you need to play some kids on defense. But I also expect them to shop for another defenseman. |

The speculation seems to be that Seattle will take everybody's defensemen and then blackmail teams to try to keep them or trade them out at a premium for forwards that wouldn't be available for free. |

I say underestimated a LOT. He essentially stepped up into a 1-2 D role and ate defensive minutes like a pre-game meal. I love what Weber and Petry bring to the team, but to be honest? Chiarot played better than Petry did the entire playoffs. And I love Petry. |

I agree with everything you said.
Ideally, a LHD that could run the powerplay while not being a complete mess defensively would be great.
I don't think we'll move for another centre unless we lose Danault. Habs decided to pick KK with their 3rd overall pick a few years back, the plan HAS to be to bet on him at least a little.
I believe in him, always have, but he will need to take a bigger role offensively next year for me to keep my enthusiasm.

A (frank)ed up hand on a guy whose main strengths are his shot and passing probably explains a lot of this. |

Heard they think he's soft and got pushed around too much during the playoffs....they have other puck carrying Dmen, they need grit. |

I wouldn't mind, but not really the PMD that everybody wants.
I think I would try to grow Romanov into that player, but that's me. He's still very young. |

I get that. I love what Jeff brings. But tossing away a player who can step up as high as Chiarot did, is just dumb. We'd be assuming whoever steps into his spot can reproduce what he brought, and I just don't think it's that easy. |

Could they protect 8 players instead?
Chiarot, Weber, Petry, Edmunson, Gallagher, Toffoli, KK and Anderson. They don't have to protect Suzuki or Caufield.
But you may lose Lehkonen or Evans. |

Yes. Also, Savard fetched a 1st and a 3rd at the deadline. I can imagine a contender paying that for Ben Chiarot at next year deadline. |

Why would we lose RFA's instead of 1 year of Chiarot though?

It's not tossing away a player. It's an expansion draft, they have to lose somebody |
