For the extra amount I've tried to watch on him this year to find out why he is so well liked.
I said he reminds me mostly of Scott Laughton with maybe a bit more offensive. Very top end you might see someone like Brayden Schenn.
Brayden Schenn as a junior was a much better scorer than what McTavish was.
He plays centre like Hyman plays winger for Matthews. He's the guy who goes to the corner to bang, then to the front of the net. Evident by his goal totals that exceed his assist totals by quite a bit.
He is physically more mature than a lot of junior players. That will catch up to him.
Brayden Schenn is a good player and worthy of 9oa. McTavish isn't the same junior scorer.
McTavish is a player that Van could use just not really worthy of 9oa. - manvanfan
Makes sense, thanks for the breakdown |

In my books not fired but he sure has a lot of cap tied up in aging D vets. - Nighthawk
True, but that happens when you’re a perennial contender. Happened to the Canucks after 2011.
They are rebuilding now, and my guess is they’ll do a better job at rebuilding then the Canucks have done.
I’m curious to see what they do after missing the playoffs two seasons in a row. |

Ok then who do you like & why at 9. I know it’s a guess who will be there. |

Sharks are a mess. That team is very far off from being a threat again.
Not worried about LA until we see how good their drafting and development turns out to be, it was good in the past but now they have new management. Once they start churning out calder candidates then I'll consider them a threat. - Nucker101
Would you like to place a friendly wager on that statement? |

Their contracts are much worse & the cupboard is in bad shape. Lots of work ahead for years. |

Avatar or location bet?
And what are the qualifications of being a "threat" for you? A playoff appearance?
You have like 3 accounts so I assume all 3 accounts are in play here |

At 9oa, I think you can find much more complete players even in this draft.
A lot of knocks on Cole Sillinger for this and that, people have absolutely picked apart his game. Somehow though through all of those things, he has put up numbers on a poor team that Boeser never did in the USHL. Was very good in the WHL as a draft minus 1 player.
Attributes that can be easily improved on too. What happens when he puts it together.
What is disliked about McTavish's game? Nobody is too worried about his skating, says his shot is good, he is physically mature. Where's the upside? What more do you get from McTavish.
Strengths
Skating
Scoring ability and shooting
Gets to the front of the net and makes things happen
The offensive side of the ice
Under Construction (Improvements to Make)
Bulking up and growing into his frame
The defensive side of the ice |

There are 7 players I would take at 9oa. There really isn't anyone I would take at 8, 9, 10. Obviously someone is going to be drafted there but I'd rather drop down to 11 and pick up someone. You getting better value at that spot for someone you would pick because you drop down to get something else in another pick or something. |

Don't worry, actual professionals will pick McTavish well before the Canucks get a chance for him. |

How dare you sit on the fence after insulting my boy Raty's hockey IQ?
Unless you want Pinelli, then we're still cool. |

You can't teach size per Burke. The above all looks better then Sillenger. Plus he'd have an instant role on Canucks.
I get you believe he's rated to high because of U-18. Okay I'll give you that for top 5 pick. But 90A seems fair. Again we have no clue who'll be available. But bet you McT is on JB's list of 9. |

That would be so perfect. Just eliminate him from the possibilities and Van fans won't have that sort of disappointment that Benning loves to give them. |

I’m more & more liking a trade down. No not every year lol but there are many prospects I like 9-14th. Also trading down gets either a sweetener or cap dump. |

It wasn't just me
Here's quotes from scouts/execs
Aatu Raty, C, Karpat-Liiga: Raty was considered to be a top prospect in this class at one point, but he had a poor draft season and saw his stock fall considerably.
“I think he was just one of those guys who was more physically advanced than other players at an early age, I never believed in the hype. He’s a worker with some skill, but I don’t see a ton of hockey sense in his game.”
“I like how he competes, how he plays with pace. I think there’s some offense, but for me he’s a 3C in the NHL, if he plays higher it’s a 2W.”
“He’s got really good hands, he works, he can score. His skating is awkward, but he’s a good player.”
Put all the comments together, it's someone who will most likely have a decent NHL Career. Just not someone who is worthy of 9oa.
I do want Pinelli. I think he's pretty underrated. Even then I don't think I'd want Pinelli at 9oa. I'd prefer if you could get Sillinger or Pinelli at 11 or 12oa. Then you are getting better bang for your buck at that spot but this draft really isn't that deep IMO to get that kind of bang for your buck picking either at 9oa |

It's easer to teach size than hockey IQ which is pretty unteachable. |

At 9th I want a true 3C with good upside. Size & grit be important along with scoring. Is that McT I believe so.
Kent Johnson on skill set alone does stand out. I question D & necessary for our roster make up. He’s young & could be the best pick if there.
Trading down would definitely be for need & the added piece or dump. RHD Ceulemans stands out but have some reservations.
Lucius intrigues me after 9th.
A few others for BPA will also be quite to my liking.
What it comes to is picking a gem that fits & pans out. Cannot miss on the 1st whether 9 or later. |

Chaz Lucius, C, USNTDP-USHL: Lucius is a top-rated prospect known for his goal scoring who missed most of the season due to injury and illness.
“You don’t see a lot of goal heavy, average feet and compete NHL centers, so I think he ultimately goes to the wing. He will score a lot, he’s extremely skilled and can make plays to go with the goals.”
“He has elite skill and elite timing around the net. He has courage and hockey sense. The skating will need to improve, but I still see a high scoring top-six forward in the NHL.” |

lol. I have two and only using Hefty because it’s linked to my phone. Let’s do avatar for this bet and I’ll change both to be fair.
Qualifications: Sharks vs Canucks, I’ll take sharks and you Canucks. First team to see a second round appearance wins. Winner chooses the other’s avatar for one year.
What say you? |

You're taking a risk with anyone at 9 OA in this draft, or any draft for that matter. I've read such a mixed bag on Raty. Some even praising what others are slagging. I'm just going with what I've seen and feel to form my own opinion.
The good thing is even if the trade down option isn't there, going off the board a bit to get a player you want will still be. It's kinda cool how greatly the consensus varies this year. |

Teams want full value for every pick I'm sure, just doesn't work that way. Finding a reasonable player that has a long career that isn't too far off is still a win. |
