Exactly what they should be doing, load up the team for Sid and Geno's last years and ride off into the sunset.
- j.boyd919

JR already opened the floodgates. 2023 the Pens have every pick, so start there as the year you stop handing poop out.

If they can use those picks to land the Pens someone like Gibson, add sweetener to get Matheson off the books, etc... then they should do it.

At the very least I have more confidence in Hextall to use those futures wisely.

There is no scenario where bringing in the second coming of JJ is a decent pickup. The dude is trash.
- j.boyd919

Yea that's exactly the player we female doged about for 3 years, he's just a right handed version. Hard pass.

I really don't believe Hextall would use a 2nd to get someone like Ryan Reaves lol

If you think about it, Ryan Reaves greatest accomplishment was getting a high return in trade for him.

JR traded away a player who was better than Reaves and a 2nd rounder. He should good about himself that someone wanted him that badly.

You absolutely keep that 2022 and 2023 1st unless you are getting a young elite player.

Guess they plan to tank for 2022 and 2023. Smart hire.

I would rather take one on a trial run of Risto than be tied to Petterson or Matheson for another five. Risto has been on terrible teams his whole career where he has been asked to do way too much. Give him the Schultz/Ceci treatment and he will make for a good option on the right side.

I am by no means stating that I think Risto is awesome, but the comparison to JJ is just lazy. He definitely would not be one of my top targets but if I have the chance to get him while unloading one of our other problem contracts on D I do it in a heartbeat.

You need cheaper 3rd pair options not more expensive ones.

I'd honestly just roll POJ-FRIEDMAN third pair. If it needs an upgrade hit it at the deadline.

The comparison to JJ is lazy?

They both came in the league as first round picks.
Both had inflated point totals as young players due to PP time.
Both players suck balls at defense.
Both players chase hits and leave their partner on an island.

Even watching them they play a similar game.

But yeah, it's a lazy comparison, hahahahaha.

I'm glad Hextall and Burke are pumping the breaks and thinking about the future, but part of me is like why stop at this point? Why not just say (frank) it with 21 and 22?
- Rinosaur

Well that depends. Will you still support the 2028 Houston Penguins?

Yeah I'm worried about them keeping support through a long rebuild. Also wonder if the owners will stick with it since they were trying to sell before getting Crosby.

As I said I’d have more confidence in Hex to use them more wisely than JR.

I wouldn’t use a 1st on a rental of any sort like the morons on capfriendly keep doing for Morgan Reilly lol.

If a first can get Gibson I think you do that. He’s not young, but he’s an elite goalie on an affordable contract that likely becomes a tradable asset later in the future.

It's funny how it used to be trade the picks and prospects while Sid and Geno are in their primes. Now they are exiting them and people want to keep competing, but they don't have enough of a farm system to sustain them. If the Pens wanted to keep competing for the end of Sid and Geno's careers, they needed to hold onto some of those futures along the way.

Selling of futures for quality players to win now doesn’t send this team to another city. The Pens almost had to move for very different reasons.

Viewership and fan attendance will always go down when the team stops being successful, but with modern technology making games super accessible to the fan base, I really don't think there's a risk of the Pens sinking to the point of almost leaving again. We're a top 10 most valuable team in the NHL currently. Would take a LOT of self sabotage by ownership or an ownership that is absolutely fixated on moving beyond reason (like the Chargers' ownership) to put us in the danger zone again.

Totally agree, but JR didn’t do that so that’s why I feel like why stop now? Wisely move them if you can vastly improve this team, but don’t sell anything off from 2023 and on.

Save percentage does not stop the puck ..........a goalie does So if you are a bad team and give up a lot of shots and out of 100 shots your goalie gives up 5 goals you are happy?

So a 95 sv%? No I'm not happy, I'm pissed off at the team, but its a miracle we didn't get 10 goaled that game so props to the goalie. This isn't (frank)ing hard, dude.
