Nope, he is the last one on the team that should have been displaying that kind of attitude.
I realize it's not that simple but he should have been told to sit and have been traded right then and there. If for nothing else as the symbol to the team that it doesn't matter who you are or where your from, the me first stuff is not part of what they're trying to build. Nip that poop in the bud immediately. - joel878

sure, and the leafs also have the same amount of success as the Sabres and Red Wings in that time frame.

I knew Matthews and Marner would be really good players.
Again there was a time Marner was more important than Matthews according to some on here. - Santo_44
You just didn't think Matthews would be as good as he is?
I still don't know why you felt Marner is/was more important than Matthews..

The top one is Matthews. The bottom one is probably Eichel.

To me, what's dumb is the Marner took that personally. Matthews was the 1st overall pick, Marner wasn't. Matthews is a C, which has more value than a winger..
I'm not bothered by Lou doing that.. In reality, he treated Marner no different than any other draft pick he's made outside of Matthews.. What bothers me, is that Marner felt he needed to be treated differently.. Which is part of the problem... That 'me first' attitude of his.
Even after the 1st rd loss, that story about Marner not willing to change how he plays on the PP, is another indicator of his me first attitude - PatC80
I saw it as a red flag at the time, to get a very favorable deal in the first place based on what he'd done and then to twist the knife for a couple hundred grand a year? At that point it seemed like he was more about the money and had a sizeable ego. To demand something from a contract he signed his name to showed a lack of character IMO. |

Nope.
I was hoping for Anze Kopitar as that was his comparable according to most scouts.
Glad they were wrong.
I didn't but go look at the boards from 3 years ago. |

The point is he signed that with the intentions to drive a hard bargain on his next deal.
Which is exactly what happened. |

Matthews wasn't supposed to be this good? Really? Matthews was considered a generational, franchise-changing prospect when he was drafted.
You think Marner earned his bonuses based off of his junior career? - PatC80
He wasnt considered generational at all.

Dubas stood fast with Nylander.
Why wouldn't he let lil' Mitchy and his dad sweat it out for a month or two? |

There was belief it would make dubas look bad and not be in control. Kinda a rookie gm at that time. |

Oh. Cause phrases like "I don't want to play anywhere else" isn't really about special deals as much as it's largely an indicator that you don't intend on butt (frank)ing the entire franchise. |

Meh, not much to see there, looks like most people thought it was a bit much but hopeful he could live up to it. Pretty similar to what it is now except he hasn't lived up to it playoff wise. Generally just happy that he would be back for the season. |
