It's not a big secret that Jones wants to play in Colorado and will sign an extension there. Colorado may wait or they may not. They're likely going to lose a defenseman in the ED so if they can use that player to acquire Jones rights, then why not pull the trigger? Likely going to wait until after the ED but another team could beat them to it. - MJL
Sam Girard catching a lot of flak after their 2nd-round exit. He may be one of the guys they flip to Columbus for Jones. |

There are no guarantees. Positive or negative. Bringing up a few players who didn't age well and ignoring the examples of many players who did age well, does not support trading Couturier. Neither does bringing up an unrelated trade from the past. How did Buffalo fair in trading Ryan O'Reilly? There's another side of the street in the game you play here. Couturier is not a player you trade to change chemistry. - MJL
Horrible example in oreilly. He demanded or forced a trade. For gods sake he threatened to retire. Obviously you’re getting peanuts on the dollar in a trade under that circumstance |

Stamkos is also better than Giroux and Voracek. - KGBflyers10
With his injury history and comparing him to G in his prime, I don’t think so |

Fair enough. I don't think Couturier will be a top 6 center in 5-6 years. They will regret that 8 year minimum 8 million per before 5 years. - hello it's me 2050
He’s never been a top 6 center. It’s ok to say it. He’s middle of the pact 1c. He’s a great 2c. So many other 1c ahead of coots. Especially now with age, wear on body, pending contract. Those who think and say sign coots thinking they’ll win with him really no reason to bother. They are status quo and probably only watch flyers and are blind to other players and really have zero understanding of cap ramifications. They will defend with orange colored glasses always |

How old is Bergeron now? - wcorvette
I can center 2 hall of famers and look decent. I love when Bergy who is better than coots to begin with )Bergy is a hall of famer) coots is not. How many selkes Bergy got? And again bad example. Look at the line mates |

They both have the same amount of points despite the fact that Stamkos has played 100 less games. |

In the end, Tampa still drafted those two players. So, it's not really luck. Its called good scouting. - KGBflyers10
Lets say you are on a dating site. You favorite some gals, and then ask your top choice out. It does not work out. You then go to your second choice, and she turns out to be an amazing person.
Should you get some credit in picking the 2nd girl at all, out of hundreds? Nah. You didn't pick her first. Thus, it was all luck after that.

It's not horrible. Giroux was 24 when he signed his contract. Were you against the contract at that time? Voracek was 25 when he signed his deal. Were you against the deal at that time? You need some veteran players on a team. Couturier is exactly the kind of player you re-sign to an extension. For many reasons. - MJL
You really are daft sometimes. You just answered it

Coots 30 when big contract comes.
Thanks for the service coots you don’t give big contract to 30 year old |

A bit of Flyers draft trivia...
1. Anyone know..how many RHD have the Flyers drafted in the last ten years (2011 draft with Couturier through last year’s 2020 draft)?
2. Can you guess…how many combined NHL games those RHD have played to date?
3. Who is the highest drafted RHD taken by the Flyers during that 10-year window and in what round was he drafted? |

This is an awful analogy.
Just because a team picks a lesser player first doesn't mean they don't value the 2nd player they choose. Drafting is a science. Organizations have draft boards laid out for months. The idea that Tampa, or let's say the Red Wings, back in the day, continually lucked out on players they drafted is ridiculous. |

The revisionist history on that pick is becoming comical. The Flyers drafted the #1 ranked NA skater according to central scouting. - MJL
Funny but actually flyers scouts didn’t want nopa. They wanted miro. But by all means believe central scouting (laughable actually) is the b all of scouting knowledge. There were many others that had prospects ranked higher than nopa.
Elite prospect.com look it up. |

Hextall cleared out the cap and set this team up with a bunch of highly talented players. It's really a shame that management panicked. - MJL
I agree with most all of what you said but the jury is still out on the drafting that Hextall did. He had some nice picks. His grade right now in my mind is a B-. I think this season changes that grade, good or bad. Enough time has gone by for the picks to have real impact. |

No link needed, BMeltzer explained this a while ago on this very board. - jd250
To be accurate:
It was the European scouts and they were pushing for miro not makar. While some may have wanted makar the miro scouts were screaming the loudest. Hexy couldn’t get everyone on board and went with the consensus nopa instead of swinging for a home run. Hexy while maybe can’t be blamed I mean come on if ever you’re given a free pass to take that swing it was then. Even if you strike out you have every excuse. Moving from 13-2 you have to take that shot. I can see if you sucked and were picking 2 to begin with but it was just a big fat meatball lobbed up there and hexy to strike 3 looking |

I agree with what you say. I was just highlighting (or so I thought) the absurdity of MJL's logic.

He was the number 1 North American skater by NHL Central scouting, which also had Cale Makar at 9 and Nick Suzuki at 10 to give you an idea of how good NHL central scouting is. They also listed Hiro Heiskanen at the 4th best European skater. However Dallas picked Heiskanen at 3 and Colorado picked Makar at 4 so they obviously new better than central scouting did. In fact, if Patrick was not selected by the Flyers, he might have slipped all the way to 6, because it was clear Vancouver wanted Pettersson at 5. Yes it was bad luck Patrick did not work out, for the Flyers that is. So now its the punch line of a joke. - jd250
WINNER! WINNER! WINNER! Exactly. Eliteprosects.com did not have nopa as pick 1 or 2. Central scouting is just a tool and citing it as source(excuse) is sad actually. |

ISS, McKeen's, FC all had NP #1 or #2.
McKenzie's aggregate GM survey had Patrick at #2. Pronman and Button had NP at #2 as well.
Sportsnet had Patrick #1.

Now we're getting somewhere. They saw the decline. They may have known he had a back issue. Your reasoning is generic and is not about Couturier as an individual player. Is Couturier declining? You don't have to trade your top #1 center who is one of the best two centers in the league to turn over the roster. To change chemistry. More than any other player on the team, Couturier builds chemistry. He makes every player he plays with better. - MJL
My reasons were specific and directly tied to Couturier. We know he is a good player. His value is high due to his performance and his friendly, for another year, cap hit.
Also, the Flyers missing the playoffs or losing in the 1st round 8 of the last 9 years is the issue. Couturiers's chemistry and 2-way status has not changed this.
If Couturier is as good as you say, then trading him can help address multiple problems with the Flyers roster. This can greatly change the team chemistry and turn the roster over as well as bring depth to a lineup that can use it. It also can help with cap space for future moves.
The Flyers only have 2 younger players to hit the 20 goal mark. Konecny and Farabee. They also need help on defense. Moving Couturier can greatly help these areas.
The goal is not to hold onto to Couturier.
The goal is to improve the team.
Trading Couturier can do just that. That is why moving him, a soon and possibly big cap hit, is a serious consideration.

Giroux hit the 30 goal mark once. |

I would be very surprised if Jones is moved before the deadline next year. Why would any team give up a lot for a player that said he will not sign a new deal? Unless of course there is a wink wink deal between Jones' camp and Colorado, but then why not just sign the deal now? - jd250
I would be very surprised if he wasn't traded at the deadline next year if he is still with Columbus and they are not in contention (maybe even if they are) at that time. This literally happens every year.
They'd be sure to get at least a 1st and a decent prospect for a top 2/4 RHD from a team that is gearing up for a run and don't care about resigning him. Think TB or TOR, Jones with Reilly or Hedman would make a huge difference. Salary wouldn't be much of an issue if it was at the TDL, and can be retained as well. |

Yes, let's look at TB's superior scouting department. Brayden Point was drafted with the 79th pick in the 2014 NHL draft. With the 19th pick in that draft, TB drafted Tony DeAngelo. With their first pick in the 2nd round, the 35th pick, they drafted Dominik Mason. He's lighting it up for TB. Spent 5 seasons in the AHL and is not in the KHL. With their 3rd pick in that draft, the 57th pick, they drafted Johnathon MacLeod. He's a stalwart on TB LOL. Played 4 years in college and one year in the ECHL and is currently out of hockey. All the while, TB was waiting to spring their trap with their superior scouting to draft the player they knew was going to be a star all along with the 79th overall pick and chose Brayden Point! They knew he was going to be a top player and they knew he would fall to the bottom the 3rd round. Their scouting is that good. - MJL
Just like Detroits scouting department. 'We know this Zetterberg, Lidstrom and Datsyuk guys are going to be HOFer's, but lets wait until the 6th round to draft them...

Horrendous gaffe by Flower. So far, it is going ok for you, but I thought the bet was Habs win you win else me. I stand by VGK.
Bolts-Isles is interestingly poised. Play has been fairly even, but Isles are struggling to score without pp and mistakes. If not for a horrible goal allowed by Vasilevsky and a brain fart by Cernak, it could easily be 3-0 Bolts. I expect Isles to open it up more. Apparently Wahlstrom is playing today and I expect their D to jump in more. Bottom line is, they have succeeded in getting TB to play their game, and they are down 1-2 to show for it. I would not be surprised if today there are a lot more goals and some fights.
Btw, Barzal is often the best forward on the ice, and Stamkos looks like a shell of his glory self. |
