I remember those days. Trade Yzerman for Yashin! Fedorov for Roenick! I wasn't one of them. Harry Neale also benched Yzerman. Got fired. And never coached another NHL game. - gergeswillems
Can you imagine if they had listened to the fans and traded those guys? The fans were rabid on the radio call-in shows. |

Who’s going to want a soft 10.9m who doesn’t score in the playoffs????
Nobody!!!!!! - Garnie
True. We’re screwed. |

Agreed. Take McDavid out of the picture and Marner is a threat to win the scoring title. I’m not sure we make the playoffs without him. - shack67
Yeah, I disagree. I feel we aren't in to different a spot with a 4-5 million dollar winger with Matthews, and the extra money used elsewhere.
Marner is not a difference maker, he doesn't finish 4th in scoring without the leagues highest goal scorer cashing. 11 million dollars for 0 PPG goals is not going to get a team anywhere in the cap era.
Just look at the list of soup cans that have been lights out playing with Crosby for a second, none of them have needed the 7th highest cap hit in the league. |

Marner put up numbers with Bozak as his centre. He put up numbers with Tavares. Playing with Marner was one of the selling points presented to Tavares during the presentation.

No, but he loved it when others played physical. Him, not so much. |

3 of the 7 highest cap hits in the league, and in a middle of a flat cap, and people are still trying to make comparisons? Yes, keep comparing the current situation the Leafs are in to a team from before the salary cap. Yeah, that’s smart. |

... So? What does that have to do with where they're at now?
Marner wanted to get paid, he got paid. He hasn't done anything of significance outside of the regular season since to even warrant half of his paycheque.
The team can use his money elsewhere, and getting rid of other players to accommodate his lack of production when it counts isn't going to result in steps forward. |

They never would've won those 4 Cups that's for sure. Back in those days Red Wings fans always blamed the goalies for playoff losses. Cheveldae, Essensa, Vernon, Osgood, Joseph, Legace, Hasek, Howard. All the bandwagon fans are long gone now. |

Somebody will take softie mcfloatie - he only makes 7.
We can then use his cap for Hamilton, move Marner to Nylander’s spot on the 3rd line, maybe he can score from there. |

Something Gretz said back in the day always has stuck with me..
after the Isles beat them for a cup ... he walked by the Isles room and the guys .. the stars.. Trottier / Potvin / Bossy all totally black and blue ice all over.. just sitting there..
The light went off for him... he had to raise his game even more and do whatever it took.. blocking shots.. killing penalties .. whatever to win a cup..
He has said multiple times.. his whole mindset changed from that time on... - dozerD10
I thought it was Kevin Lowe who told this story. Maybe Gretzky did too..
Lowe says...
"We were dressed and heading out to catch our bus. During the long walk down the corridor between the two clubhouses at Nassau Coliseum, we passed the winner's dressing room. We could see them celebrating but we also saw the ice packs on their shoulders, their jaws and their knees. A lot of them soon would have to have operations because of their injuries. That's when we realized what they had gone through to win and we said to each other, 'Hey, now we know what it takes. You gotta' put your face in front or slapshots, take a punch in the face. You gotta' sacrifice -- that's what winning is all about.' After that we didn't need any more lessons."

Leafs need to do something more drastic. Would you swap Marner, even up for Matthew Tkachuk? Sure, you wouldn't have the dynamic skating and passing, but his physical play and tenacity would look good beside Matthews. More room for Matthews to play and he may hit 60! It would make for a harder matchup for the opposition. Tkachuk's cap hit is $7M. That extra $3.5M would go a long way into signing Zack Hyman. While they're at it, move Rielly, get a tangible asset and pursue Dougie Hamilton. The Leafs get bigger and more playoff ready. |

There’s agreement that changes are needed but disagreement on how you move things around. Let’s say all the big pieces - Rielly and Marner stay - you’ve potentially got some Freddie money, some Hyman money and some Kerfoot money to get a goalie and then spread around to D or forwards.
One approach is simply to become less reliant on your top line period. Maybe break up Mitch and Auston. Maybe create a strong offensive third line around Willie. Bring in some forecheckers as you priority spending for the summer (along with a goalie) and only spend money in the defence if Rielly is gone but don’t go nuts. How much is the swimmers brother worth?
There are ways to change the way this team plays. There are ways to make them less reliant on their top line without shipping out Marner. - Canada Cup
Yeah, i think in the end it's smarter to keep Mitch and let him grow as a player. It's tough right now but can still payoff in the end. It's worth exploring what a deal would look like and if a team is overpaying then probably worth doing, but for now I'm fine with them sticking with him. |

Exactly my point.. To win, he had to do whatever .. and others would follow.. and the rest is history.

Honestly, would rather trade McSpastic backpass limpd!ckplayoffs and his $10.9. Pisses me off even more when I see him on every other commercial on TV. (frank) him, (frank) his agent, (frank) his dad for ripping the Leafs off.
Instead of the $9.6 million bonus he will get this year, I'd give him this:

So? You’re the one who said he doesn’t put up those numbers if not playing with Matthews. I think you’re wrong about that and I think I showed you why I think that. |

A+
I remember hearing Gretsky being interviewed on that experience. He was saying talent and skill were not enough. He talked about learning from those Islander warriors. They refused to lose.
