Oh alright! Marner to Detroit for Rasmussen. You're welcome. 👍

Now we can sign Hamilton and still have cap space.

Semin had 22 of his 34 points in the first two years he made the playoffs. Only 12 in the remaining 3 years.

Marner has 13 of his 25 points in the first two years. Only 12 since. 18 game goalless streak and he makes 10.9M. Oh we are screwed.

- Steven_Seagull

So 1 point difference......... No goals? He's a franking Playmaker! Backstrom hasnt scored many playoff goals either

The plan isn’t going to work. 3 guys in the top 7 highest cap hits while in a flat cap. Brilliant plan. Can’t wait to see the excuses next year. Bad luck, injuries, the sun was in their eyes, the refs hate us. Can’t wait.
- Steven_Seagull

Fine but be smart in how you do it. “Cap is too concentrated in a few guys”. Solution? Get top guy in UFA market.

First, target the problems. I’m hearing Marner is number one. I think they need to change the way they play. If they decide Marner can’t or he can’t elevate his game in the playoffs, move him. But how is Hamilton the solution?

If they keep him but change the way they play, bring in the guys to make the changes. How is Hamilton the solution?

When it comes to playoff hockey, at least based on this year, the defence doesn’t seem to be the problem. 2 goals against per game average and our very expensive forwards unable to score.

Backstrom wasn’t making 10.9 a season. That Marner contract (frank)ing sucks. 7th highest in league but only 3rd highest on the team. And now there’s a flat cap for the next 4 or so years.

Totally overblown.

Nylanders contract is a bargain so whatever

AMs is right on par with being a top player in the league

JT and Marner combined for a prorated amount of 171 points which is 86 PPG each. Are they worth 22 M? Probably not but how far is it? 3-4 M?

Caps won with a 3rd pairing D in Orpik making 5.5M

Blues won with a bottom 6 C Bozak making 5M

TB won without an 8M Stamkos and a 5M 3rd line player Johnson

Teams have continuously won cups with some cap "mistakes" on their roster. The Leafs have no Orpik, Bozak or Johnson.

The Leafs cap mistakes is a 3-4M difference. I'll take that over a Marleau or Zaitzev causing the same 3-4M difference 10 times out of 10.

I'm just curious though - how long is Marner's current playoff goal drought. Also, what is his puck-over-glass to goal ratio, and his cap hit?

The Habs offence suck. Wow, we should raise a banner for that defensive performance.

Adding a top pairing D helps. Vegas seems like they’re still a good team after signing Pietrangelo even though they already had a pretty good D. Oh well, I wonder who’s the next career AHLer will play 21 minutes a night.

Deleting Semin from their core set them back.

Overreacting to not having immediate success set them back.

- Santo_44

No, trading Forsberg set them back.
Semin didn't. Soft player.

Facts are facts.

After Semin left they played 1 playoff round in 2 years.

That is 100 percent a setback. Well...because it is exactly that.

They should have reacted sooner and traded him for something instead of just letting him walk for nothing. Could’ve maybe helped them win sooner and more often. Oh well, hindsight.

Nope

Neat, that’s one.

Cool

Sweet

Good for them

Good for Bozie

Their top guys actually show up in the playoffs. Ours don’t.

Having 3 of the 7 highest cap hits and win hasn’t happen before, not comparable. The flat cap makes the already difficult task nearly impossible. There’s always next year, right?

ffs

You don't look at anything within reason do you?

Every team wins with overpaying certain players.

40 M on 4 players? Cool let me see the rest of the cap.

Winning a cup with an overpay of 3-4 M on all of your players combined is most certainly manageable because teams do it every single year. But sure hop on that bandwagon if it helps you sleep at night.

Math is math and it doesn't care if you want to focus on only half the numbers. In the end it all adds up.

If:

- Matthews plays like he did last year while scoring like he did in 2019
- Marner plays like he did in 2018
- Nylander plays like he did this year
- Tavares plays. Well, that’s it.

all happens in the same playoffs (with an upgraded top-4 D), then they should go far, and maybe even win. Until then, I will remain extremely sceptical as they haven’t proven jack freaking shït.

They also won the cup with a majority of a different roster......Ovechkin and Backstrom are literally the only guys who were on that team from start to finish. Different GM and Different coach. Prabably different ice girls too if they have them
- xShoot4WarAmpsx

Exactly why I think the Leafs shouldn’t be in love with a player (Marner) who is soaking up 11M.

It’s not silly nor is it “overreaction” to question the Core 4 paradigm.

Running this core back again for another run seems like an effort in futility to me. But hey, must not deviate.

His contract is poop. Oh well. You are trading a 24 year old Winger whos over a point per game in the regular season because he has a bad contract. What value to you honestly see getting for him. I can tell you right now not many teams are going to be able to take that contract.

People here suggest Eichel. So dealing a 90 point guy who sucks in the playoffs (apparently) for a guy who makes close to the same $ and hasnt BEEN to the playoffs in his career.

What other options are there that get you the value of Marner? You going to make a Thornton type deal where you get a quantity of average players for your star? Any way you look at it, if any deal was to be made, similar cap would need to come back
