Ask yourself if it's due to the Habs or the Islanders being in the final four? |

I think foundational change can mean almost anything, with that said, I think it's not just going to be about re-painting the walls... Dubas is probably looking to fix the roof..
I think it means Rielly is done as a Maple Leaf, he's been here the longest and is an alternate captain. I do think the big 4 will remain intact but it's not just gonna be walking away from Joe Thornton. - PatC80
More than likely Rielly gets moved out and that could very well be the "foundational" piece being alluded to.
I don't that sounds quite earth-shattering enough though. There are murmurs that this is the first year that the Leafs owners have been upset. Maybe the pressure will be there to do something more sweeping?
Dubas can't possibly think the Core 4 - at their current rate - can achieve playoff success, can he?
Watching a bit of the later rounds this year and it's absolutely clear (as always) that this is not the same hockey in any way, shape, or form compared to the regular season. Low event, low-skilled, counter-attacking teams, who rely on stellar goaltending are repeatedly rewarded. The Leafs are not that kind of team.
Surely Dubas can see this?! |

He's very good. We should grab him if we can. I'd rather trade for him and let Hyman walk. - RogerRoeper
Agreed.
We could have drafted Konecny....technically Hamilton as well but we traded the picks |

Reality is the way the game is called in the playoffs determines how teams are built. The Isles/TBay series is a joke right now in terms of officiating.
And Tampa is no low skilled team.

Im hoping he's not absolutely committed to the Core 4. But it seems like he is.
If they can get Dougie, great, I'll jump on the Dougie train.
However, with 40m committed to 4 forwards, I dont see how you sign an 8m player without moving out a big contract. Sure they could move Rielly, but I dont think that frees up enough space to allow for them to fill the rest of the holes.
We'll see. - Fakepartofme
Dubas may seem committed to the Core 4 publicly, but it would not be intelligent strategically to undermine his confidence in the those pieces if he wants to explore trades, would it?
Per signing Hamilton, trading Rielly and letting Hyman walk should do it. There's plenty of ways to make that work.
Not saying it will or won't happen but I don't think it's outrageous to think the Leafs could land Dougie.
One has to believe Dubas needs to make a significant move to satisfy his masters. |

I'd rather Dubas "throws money around" on superstars than a 29 year-old grinder with a career high of 41 points playing with only franchise players. Overpaying Hyman is a total Edmonton Oilers move.
It's interesting how perceptions are as well, Hyman has not been good in the playoffs and the Leafs looked fantastic when he was out of the lineup. Yet perception exists Leafs can't lose him - RogerRoeper
Because Jimmy Tanner's "studs and duds" approach has worked so well for the Leafs in the playoffs. They were just unlucky. Hockey is so random. What does the Gull say? There's always next year?
It's hilarious how you've worshipped Hyman like a God for years but now that there's a hint of him leaving you're greasing the skids for saying how overrated he is. Cheer for the laundry. |

Because signing 29 year-old wingers with 'intangibles" to long-term deals has always worked for NHL teams, hasn't it?
Leafs could have much more cap and I still wouldn't want a Hyman overpaid. |

Almost every year we see a "Cinderella" story team that benefits from a hot goalie while playing low-event, counter-attacking hockey.
The Isles did it last year and have managed to do it again.
These Cinderella types usually run out of gas or they finally run into a team that over-matches them in terms of skill and the ability to play heavy. e.g. Tampa, Vegas
Toronto's problem is that they are soft and their star players haven't figured out how to create scoring chances when teams circle the wagons and counter-punch.
Decidedly, the Leafs aren't Tampa. |

I honestly think that Marner is not yet suited for playoff hockey.. Dude needs to stop being afraid of contact..
If he can't, then I do think he should be moved out for other pieces that can be successful in the playoffs. In the 7 games against the Habs, Nylander proved he could handle the physical play..
I could see Rielly being traded, Hyman and Andersen both leaving as UFA's, which I guess could mean 'foundational', they've all been here for 5+ years
next season should be the last straw, another poor showing and one of the core 4 needs to go. This past season, maybe they blame this on Tavares' injury?

The Leafs are not Tampa, but Tampa took a while to win the cup.
Isles just won't win with that roster. Neither will the Habs. It's between Tampa and Vegas. |
