There are multiple teams who are living in cap Hell. There are a similar number of teams who have managed to create substantial cap space. People make the assumption that these two solitudes will come together somewhere in the middle to balance off the extremes.

I'm not so sure. I think for the first time teams are beginning to strategically use their cap space in a much more assertive way than they have in the past. Cap space is being weaponized. Carolina's decision to let Dougie Hamilton see if he can find a better deal with another club is a great example of how the teams with problematic cap issues are going to get played.

If, for example, the Leafs have an interest in Hamilton (or, even more so, in the case of Jones), how can they even begin to act on it?

We all are aware that you are a troll and an arse. Kindly go pontificate elsewhere.

That was a lot of words to say a whole lot of nothing.

Not even sure what your point is.

UFA coming out of Tampa now.

Sign Savard or Hamilton or Jones

Then Rielly for Jenner and a Tender! (both have one year left until UFA)

Then Marner for Tkachuk = savings of $2.9M.

Who says no? (Calgary )

- underhill14

Pass on Savard. He hasn't exactly looked too great during Tampa's run and I think if you're paying anything over 4M for his services you're going to be pretty disappointed.

Marner for Tkachuk? I wish.

Or reading. Bringing in a $3.5 or 4M guy is the most straightforward scenario and easiest way to change things up. I agree they can only do something significant if they move out big money from a big contract. I think a lot hinges on whether they believe they can extend Rielly at a number they like.

I don't consider 3.5-4M significant, so you never addressed my post. But I'm the one with reading issues?

As a non-Leafs fan, all this Marner trade talk is the dumbest thing you guys have ever discussed. I’ve sat and read these boards for years before creating an account. But this Marner bashing is absurd.

You guys lost because you didn’t want it bad enough. If you had a better system, or actually scored on the PP when it mattered maybe you’d finally have playoff success. Dubas failed to construct a roster and instil a system of accountability. Bring in Jumbo to be Mitch and Austons buddy? Foligno at the deadline to take a backseat leadership role. Your goalie is a career backup, and your best dman is a rookie. Also having your captain miss the entire playoffs w/o any accountability like, “oh well accidents happen” is exactly why you’re perennial losers. It’s quite tragic that an original 6 team with such a rich history has become this embarrassing.

What about something involving:

Konecny and Sanheim?

I know Konecny had an odd year last season but it was an odd time and a bit of a gong show in Philly from what I understand.

Defensive depth + Skilled grinder-type edge could be good.

…not sore about contracts and all that just a thought.

I agreed with you twice. They can’t do anything big/significant/substantial/monumental without making a pretty big trade. I just set out two scenarios: one for a $3.5M move and one for something bigger. I never characterized the first as substantial. I read good.

Read somewhere he wants a fresh start elsewhere.

Could be an interesting gamble for someone. His value remains pretty damn low despite him actually playing this year.

I was gonna call the cops on Perry for knocking out Tavares.

But then I remembered it's a (frank)ing hockey game and I'm not a Montreal fan.

Instilling systems of accountability - check
Wanting it bad enough - check
Perennial playoff losers - check
Backseat leadership - check
