Actually, scratch the whole golf tournament thingy.
NHL GMs now have permission to speak with him - they don't have to go the sneaky route.
FFS, why would I trade for Hamilton's rights when I can just negotiate a 7-year deal with him, and not have to worry about having to expose him to the expansion draft? - Atomic Wedgie
8 year deal on a sign and trade. |

The thing is, Rielly did not have the stas/acccomplsihments when he signed his 6 year deal Nylander, Marner and Tavares did. Marner cashed-out because he had 94 pointds the year before he signed.
He likely wants to make a killing. this is his big one. Leafs have to decide this summer if they want him back at a high number. They have to stop this "own rental" stuff. It's not working.
If they sign Rielly again, I would move Muzzin. He'll likely slow down soon and has 3 years left. And Sandin is LD. I'm not really thrilled with the idea of him being 3rd pair D. Let him play and develop. - RogerRoeper

has it ever been done with a UFA? - senstroll
Not sure. I think(?) Hossa had one year left on his RFA when he signed that contract.
I can't think of any other examples. Lots of trade and signs but not UFA sign and trades. |

Give up assets to get a high cap hit for a 36 year old? Not sure about the logic.

The sign and trade has never happened in the NHL, and it never will.
Player X goes to a golf tournament in June and lets Player Y know that he's interested in signing with that team as a UFA. Calls are made. Discussions are had.
It's not in Player X's best interests to agree to a sign and trade, because he's unnecessarily weakening the team he's going to for the next 8 years.
8 vs. 7 years isn't that big a deal for superstar players.
Friedman knows this. It's franking embarrassing that he's floating this. - Atomic Wedgie
Hey, if it lets teams talk to him early, then that can still work out. Hope the Leafs give him a call, they can offer the rights to Andersen in return |

Carolina is in a good spot, great owner, good young core, in good cap shape. Biggest issue I see is they need a goalie or two. Maybe they can sign the Zamboni driver. - winsix
Lots of goalies out there. Last year stats have zero to do with the next year for goalies it seems.

They could. They had some really sick goaltending last year and a lot of questions in net. If they lose Hamilton, they would really need Bean to step up. |

Yeah, but the New NHL was supposed to change all that: get rid of fighting, score more goals, more PPs, reduce goalie equipment, 3v3 OT, etc.
And by and large this is all true, but now the gap between regular season and playoffs is even greater in my opinion. It's like two different leagues. - gravyface
Refs don't want to decide games. By letting crap go aren't they deciding games? I'm just used to it I guess. When the Wings were choking in the playoffs alot of fans wanted to trade Fedorov for Roenick which was totally ridiculous. The Russian players were blamed. Then they won the Cup in '97 and Russian players became good. Uh they always were good. |

I think Slavin is their real MVP. Hamilton is great for the PP. He's going to get paid Petro money. His defense is average but you'll accept it because his offense is so good. They do need a goalie. I agree with that. |

There's a big gap between what Hamilton thinks he can get on the open market vs what the Canes think he can get, so they've said "okay, show us."
If he gets a great offer they won't match, then okay, sign and trade if they want that 8th year. Otherwise, see ya buddy.
Losing him would suck but it's maybe not the end of the world, especially if it lets them protect Bean and expose Skjei and Gardiner in the expansion draft.

Slavin is great. He caries the load in the D zone. His numbers also get a big boost when he plays with Hamilton though.
Dougie just does things that most other defenders aren't capable of or wouldn't even think to try.
