That's fine - let me know when you figure out who this 'impact player' is because right now all everyone is reading is you wanting to trade Robertson and without knowing who for many of us are not in agreement with that in principle at all.

Robertson making league minimum is a huge + for the Leafs if he can play top 6, hell actually in the top 9. I mean in the admittedly short time he has played with the Leafs he seems more than capable of playing in the top 9, does anyone actually think Robertson on even the 3rd line is a downgrade from (god love him but) stone hands Mikheyev or Giraffe?

I'll say he is in the starting line up next year for the Leafs and plays there all year long barring a trade or injury - they simply need him to be.

Question though, are the Leafs really in "win now" mode?

We've got a lot of good young core pieces with which we can build around...
Most of the players that are leaving as a UFA are in their 30's or 40's..

Patience? Like everyone wanting to trade Marner?
- Santo_44

Talking about trading a player making almost 11 M / year vs a kid who hasn't really had a sniff and can play a top 9 role, perhaps (likely IMHO) a top 6 role for league minimum isn't really comparing apples to apples.

I would not trade any of the young 3 of the core 4 right now either for similar reasons - patience. If they flop again, time to start looking at what can move out perhaps.

This is confusing without the quotes to respond to but whatever you said was wrong and whatever I said was right. I don’t think we are far off from winning and need to move while our best pieces are in their prime but I don’t think we should move a pick or a prospect right now (off-season). Trade deadline is another story if things look promising.

Things looked promising at the last deadline and moving a first was a reasonable investment, IMO. We got (frank)ing truculence.

Other things you can do rather than trading a top 3 point getter in the league.
- Santo_44

im fine giving it another go as is, the same core 4.
but im not confident they win a round.

this was the lay up easy route for them.. if they were ever going to slay the dragon.
up 3-1...this was it.

iv lost all confidence in this team as it is.

waste another year..thats fine

As winnable as it’s going to be for a while. Follow the arc of this team and these players. It’s not Eichel and the Sabres. They are in their prime. Run it out. Adjust it if you truly believe Marner can’t perform in playoffs and move out money and make better decisions about what you bring in.

I’m not saying they’re the Avalanche but they’re a good team that should be fixed

Wait a second ... you've lost "all confidence in the team as is" ... but you're willing to "give it another go"?

That I can agree with.. The Leafs are a good team, it just hasn't translated to playoff success just yet.

I hope they continue to draft (this year not withstanding) and develop well..

We have a decent pipeline of prospects and hopefully the Leafs will win a playoff round in the next several years.

I'd be fine with the Leafs making us all angry during the regular season with inconsistent play and "leafyness", poop the bed a few times while the young guys like Sandin, Lillybust and Robertson all learn and then just get into the playoffs in any spot but the last one (we don't need that extra stress) and then go on a rip in the playoffs.

Who needs to win a stupid division title anyways, it doesn't make you feel any better after being put out in the playoffs in the first round.

The good news is next season the Leafs shouldn't be expected to win the division and good god Vegas bookmakers should have figured out to never make them a favourite to win any playoff series never mind the cup so that pressure should be gone.

Leafs will finish 3rd behind Tampa and Boston, then lose to the Bruins again..

It's an interesting point. Why are the Bruins and Tampa ahead of the Leafs both in terms of regular season AND post-season success at this point?

What do the Leafs lack that those teams do not?

Well the NHL lets Tampa dictate their own salary cap and we all know the league has a hard-on for all things Boston..

So, we're screwed..

Both have had better goal tending consistently.

I am not sure on Tampa (but think so) but Boston had what felt like a never ending stream of young guys they would draft, develop, bring up to fit in with the big club and become very good players. They were and are not shy about parting ways with guys when they figure they can't afford them - which is a nice way of saying they don't overpay to keep guys the fans love because they know that is not a recipe for success.

On that note - Hyman may be gone next year and if it's because he will go get his cake somewhere else and we can't afford to overpay him I'm more than fine with that.

Tampa just cheats to circumvent the cap.

How confident are you they make the playoffs next year, if they are back to the regular eastern conference? I'm not convinced they would finish ahead of Tampa, Boston or Florida.
