This is probably true about Zucker being the grittiest wing in the top 9. What a low bar.
- Tojo.

That would be the reason Zucker could end up being protected. His age and salary are why he won't.

Give geno an 12m 1 yr if he agrees to a 5m 2 yr afterwards. Ltir him till the playoffs. Everybody wins.

Now what can we do with tanger... any good ideas?

- 10inchTerror

Yeah, you can't do that anymore. Two reasons:

1) The minimum salary of any year, including any signing bonuses, cannot be more than 50% of the maximum salary of any year, including signing bonuses.

2) You cannot have a difference in salary, not including signing bonuses, of more than 25% of the previous year.

Just saying, can't do it any more. Call it the Weber/Kovalchuk rule. Here's how you could structure it:

Year 1: $5M signing bonus, $5M salary.
Year 2: $3M signing bonus, $4M Salary
Year 3: $5M salary

Yeah I get it. Sucks though for overpaid spent vets though. If you’re coming off an 8m contract and are ruined from injuries you should be able to resign a 1m contract if you want. So minimum geno could take is 7.125?

See above. If Geno's worried about injuries, you include signing bonuses to entice him. I kept the $22M total you wanted over 3 years. If he never plays another game, he'd still be entitled to $8M.

Edit: Were you saying sign him to a 1-year contract for $12M, then sign a second contract for $5M per? Because that's a terrible idea since they'd have to move significant pieces to fit that first year.

I think he means in regards to contract years within a contract....I think. If Geno wanted to sign a new contract for 1 mill a year for another 5 years he could....couldn't he? hahah

Well he said to sign him for $12M the first year, which isn't realistic given their cap situation. So I assumed it was a 3-year deal.

Yeah, he was talking in terms of two contracts.

Contract 1 - 1 year $12M. Malkin will miss at least half of the season so only a $6M real cap hit.

Contract 2 - 2 year $10M with a $5M AAV when he is hopefully healthy.

I think they lock up Geno for around $7.5M for four or five years.

Yes, but the cap is calculated daily, not over the season. So while the season cap hit will be $6M, anytime he returns, they will be on the books for his full daily cap hit. That's why Kucherov couldn't play even 1 regular season game this year, they would have exceeded the daily cap hit.

The cap is $81.5M. Given a "normal" NHL season, it is 180 days, meaning that the daily cap hit is $425,778. Once Geno plays a game at $12M per year, his cap hit becomes $66,667 per day.

Malkin has had so many injuries as he has aged that I don't think that would be good for him or the team. He isn't playing for another 5 years after next season, no way. 3 years is the max and I would rather lose him now than sign him to a 5 year extension.

I like the 3 year @ $7.1 but more realistically I think he will ask to match Crosby at $8.7M which he doesn't deserve but would still likely get.

I still think the Pens wind up with Kassian and if Zucker doesn't get selected in the draft, I could see him going to EDM for Kassian and futures. Not saying I like or want that, but I could see Hextall doing something like that.
- Rinosaur

Where would he play? I could see Carter- Kassian being a good duo on the 3rd. It seems like his personal troubles are behind him. I still don’t see a scenario where they acquire size and toughness and it doesn’t lead to a clash with Sullivan.

On a positive note... at least we aint leafs fans... Montreal has eliminated more teams in the last week than Toronto has in 17 years!

Despite all the positive comments on Sully, I think he will be on a short leash. If they go out and get these gorillas and Sully doesn't use them or get the team playing a more physical brand of hockey, I think he'll be gone by mid-season.

Sully did acknowledge though that it may be time to explore changes in their system.

I'd be good with that, but that is a trade you pull off before expansion I would think. I'd actually prefer though moving Pettersson there for him instead. Pens need to ditch one of their LD and I don't think Seattle will bite.

If the Pens are keeping Jake and Kass is healthy he could end up being the perfect fit for that top line. Kassian first on the forecheck to hit the D, Crosby picks up the loose puck and feeds to Jake... rinse repeat.

If they pulled that trade off I don't see Kassian playing with Sid except in very specific situations.

Agreed but at the same time it doesn’t make sense to make lateral movements. They’re definitely in a weird spot goalie wise.
- Feds91Stammer

A lateral movement might actually make sense for them just to be rid of the questions all year.

I think getting a 1B goalie is the way to go.

Sure but if it’s not a goalie that’s already had playoff success similar questions will be had.

That's a problem with many the FA goalies and goalies possibly available for trade. Not many of them have extensive playoff success.

In reality I agree. To most of the fan base, Jarry is the problem. It would take a lot of guts to bring him back as the unchallenged starter.
