Looks like Vancouver (#9 pick) and Ottawa (#10 pick) are open to trading their picks this year. Vancouver wants a power forward (and cap space), and Ottawa wants a legitimate #2 center.

Too bad the Hawks don't have anyone that fits for either team, except the cap space part for Vancouver.

Probably unsure with limited hockey in the past year

Toronto's system is not "no defense". They are just bad at it. They have a lot of offensive firepower which gets a ton of headlines, and those players are either ineffective or unwilling to commit to playing solid defense. Their D-corps is average at best, their goalie is average at best and most of their forwards are poor at forechecking, back checking, and engaging defensively.

How do you know their defensive problems aren't a bad coach or system or do bad coaching and system only apply to Chicago and their superior defensive personnel? Red font.

If we still had Perlini we could have packaged Strome and Perlini for a #9 & #10?

There is always griping about JC system sooner or later on this board. Apparently other teams.who use hybrid system must feel the same way as you and Ogi. Personally I always wondered why the LW Lock system went away. Did Babcock ditch it. I know they played the no defense system in Toronto. They liked the "O" but not the "X: on the diagrams too.

Has anyone heard complaints from players on other teams about the defensive system they play - a few teams have hybrid version of JC's system?

Last night in all the excitement 4 out of 5 Islanders ended up behind their own net, in sure the coaching staff doesn't draw it up that way, they got away with it but...

Totes, bruh.

I'll say this, though.... At a certain point in the development process, I believe JC needs to make lineup decisions (and line assignments) based on this aspect of the game. The Hawks have enough players that it is ok to sit guys who don't commit to the defensive zone. To be fair to JC, this may have been going on this season without him yapping to the press about it to make himself look like the tough guy (which may be a large part of why the players seem to play hard all the time for the guy). But it is time for the forwards - and the team in general - to take a few steps forward on team defense.

Now, back to the brown liquor.....

I would agree.....Q did this early on with the Hawks in 08 right after he took over for Savard. He benched Sharp and Kane in Phoenix in November that year.

Think it also comes down to the GM and coach working together....what system ideally Coach wants to run and GM giving him a roster that best maximizes said players in that system. Hawks still give up a TON of prime scoring chances where it seems guys are left wide open around the hash marks because either the D are too deep, didn't rotate, or the forwards aren't helping below.

Like the horse that has been beaten since the season ended, expectation for me next year is seeing improvement from the younger kids, and who can start to separate themselves into becoming key parts that the organization can build around. The ones that aren't or that plateau or mentally can't "get it" need to be sold high before the rest of the league catches on and said players aren't valued.

One thing this organization did very well before the "golden years" run was self evaluating a bunch of guys and flipping them into immediate needs (wisniewski for Pahlsson) or long term needs (bochenski for sharp or barker for leddy/johnsson) Those are the moves this team needs to continue to make. Hopefully a guy like Nylander will get it and be 1 of those trades we look back on and credit Bowman for.

As far as goalies go.....still think if they are going to spend some money you do it there. A guy like Lalime and/or Khabibulin were huge x factors in propelling this organization forward a lot quicker while they waited for a guy like Crawford to be "ready".....Who said veteran is, no idea but having a goalie who the team and players can "play" in front of without worrying every wrong move costs them would be invaluable.

Maybe it's because of covid and we haven't heard fans in building for over a year, but that old barn on long island is rocking each and every home game. Credit to that fan base. They are EXTREMELY loud.....

And that goal by Marchand, high risk/high reward, he misses that corner and that puck is going out of the zone and Islanders are back on the attack. NO way that can go in almost on the goal line and Vrlamonov likely went down WAY too early and lost his angle.....brutal loss for the Islanders.

Next to Toronto and Pittsburgh, I can't stand Boston. City arrogance is out of control. My younger years I would pull for Red Sox vs yankees back in early 2000s, but now...Im 100% behind NYC over Boston in any matchup.

The referees’ calling more obstruction penalties and the league’s virtually eliminating the centerline, which created openings for off-side wingers to cherry-pick, made left wing lock hockey virtually obsolete.
- LAHawk

1-3-1 is the new left wing lock. Clog up that neutral zone, force a dump in, poke it back out......rinse and repeat.

I debate daily if I had to pick 1.....strome or Zadorov who I would want to keep......god willing both won't be on the roster in October.

Throw in the "other reclamation #1 pick Quenneville." Shoot I'll throw in both Morrisons even Jim Morrison but he's old and dead and Entwhistle. Throw in enough crap and something sticks!

I think Powers was on the right rebuild path by saying instead of trading for, trying or actually signing a top high end player fro the defense, the Hawks need to spend on a temporary fix like Alec Martinez, for a couple years no mater if it costs 4.5 million. You let the kid corps sort it self out and YOU KNOW if you have a top pair guy from that group by then, and then you proceed with big swings.

I honestly think they will have not have trouble pulling the trigger on a defenseman in the first round this time around too, (IF he is the best player on the board) until they feel they have found top pair guy.

When I read this I thought you meant John Entwhistle (old and dead). Maybe throw in tickets to a Doors and Who tribute bands also?

I could see Stan moving back in the draft.

To Calgary:

Strome + #11 overall

To Chicago:

#12 overall (drafting Raty)
