Flyers don't need anything but time and a high end defenseman
Flyers won't be a team with a $10M, $11M, or $12M player, but if you look around the league, the teams going deep in the playoffs and winning championships aren't built that way - Coburns_Nose
Honest question. Did you consider Niskanen a high end defenseman?
Or was he the right fit?
Maybe they are the same player, maybe they are not. I hope Fletcher finds the right guy, not necessarily the biggest name or contract.

Are we any different than Buffalo? Yes, we every other year make the playoffs but have not accomplished anything in a decade. Yes buffalo is pathetic but we are just mediocre. Not a huge difference. - Fopa21
Buff has been putrid. Yet I believe they will be cup contenders before the Flyers. There main issues are inept management

It will be a trade for that name/contract imo. Whether a fit we shall see.
Would you make a move for Jones?

Depends on the cost. I have to wonder if we give him 10 aav (as some suggest he would get) would it deplete our ability to field a good roster overall?
Personally I would rather see them make a play for David Savard or Adam Larsson in FA.
I don't think we need a superstar. I think we need another guy like Niskanen.
People talk about how using the circumstances of the past season is an excuse. OK fair enough, but that doesn't mean they weren't still circumstances that contributed to the problems. We don't live in a one size fits all world nor is the league a one size fits all place. Not all teams and rosters were going to react the same way. To think otherwise is ridiculous.
I think this team is not as bad as they showed.
Next year will bear my opinion out one way or another.

I am good with this as long as they then add some speed and skill upfront. the speed can be short term deal, the skill should come from a good hockey trade, we lose one but get one, a goal scorer would be nice. I assume we will lose Ghost one way or the other and they really don't have a PP QB 1 right now, they'll need to compensate.
I am a believer most all players will bounce back next season, how can't they.

Well unless everyone is wrong their will be a bidding war for Jones. That right there ups the cost in assets, term, and money.
I don't think it is the right move right now.

As long as he is willing to extend, the Flyers priority should be to re-sign Couturier. He would be an exceptionally hard player to adequately replace. If he wants to test the market, it's a different story. It seems a percentage of Flyers fans are dying to turn the Flyers into the Buffalo Sabres, drafting at or near the top and yet going nowhere forward.
-BMeltzer
Thank for you for posting this Bill. Couturier is definitely part of the solution here, not the problem. Anyone who thinks getting rid of Couturier would help matter is complete asinine! The Flyers don't need a complete rebuild, they just need to revamp their core group. Easier said then done in one off season, but Fletcher should be able to make strides here. |

Apparently Carey Price is the first player in NHL history to win a PO series w/ AAV 10M+. - Tomahawk
There was guaranteed to be the first this year since both the Leafs and Habs have at least one such player. |

I agree that a larsson/savard would be a good fit. However, like everyone agrees neither of those guys nor nisky was a superstar merely a really good defenseman. So, how is that one really good defenseman makes your whole team that much better 2019-2020 record vs 2020-2021 record.
One really good defenseman doesn’t do that. The major difference was year 1 of a coach where everyone was trying to be on their beat behavior/make a good impression. Year two the loss of one really good defenseman but to play the way the played all season with that disgraceful effort game in and game out was just not putting in as much effort as year 1 because the coach already had an impression of them. Bad leadership is the problem.

Or maybe a team sees him as the missing piece and only wants him for 1 year instead of over paying on a 7 year deal. - hello it's me 2050

The loss of Niskannen was overplayed imo. To easy to use that as the reason. The players were bad. The coaches were bad.

Ho do you revamp the core of Giroux, Jake and Couturier? Giroux isn't leaving. Jake will be very hard to move. You said keep Couturier. Is Ghost part of the core? Laughton, he aint leaving being just resigned.

I think for sure there will be a bidding war. Regardless of whether Columbus has personal leverage or not because Jones isn't going to resign doesn't really matter.....The leverage they have will be the other teams offers.

Buffalo has picked in the top 10 8 drafts in a row!
Twice now with the number 1 pick and two times with the number 2 pick, and what has it got them? In fact the last time they picked outside the top 10 was the 2012 draft when they picked at number 12! |
