Yes Jarry was bad in the playoffs, but there is nothing to suggest that DeSmith would have been great either. He is an average goaltender that POSSIBLY could have made a few more saves, but the problem is the turnovers (both by Jarry and the defense). Those are the mistakes that sunk this TEAM, it's not just one player. Sid, Jake & Rust went cold, Petterssen got into a penalty taking problem, Ceci & Matheson turned the puck over in the defensive zone. Jarry didn't make saves he should have. Everyone is to blame on this, not just the goalie because you hate goalies.
- Zig44

The thing that separates DeSmith from Jarry IMO is consistency. I think Jarry is clearly the better goalie as far as ability. DeSmith IMO has a much simpler game, but provides a bit more consistency. Do I think the Pens win this series with DeSmith? Obviously you can never say for sure with an unknown, but I also think DeSmith is a grossly underrated goalie. He's a late bloomer in the NHL and IMO is probably a starter on some lower rung teams.

Bench Murray, play Jarry. What do we have to lose?

Sorry that was last year.

Dream world scenario is Boston doesn't sign Rask and we move on from Jarry and sign Rask and keep Desmith.

Rask, asset free would be pretty nice. I'd prefer Gibson if we are just talking about the player but getting Rask and keeping a 1st round pick and Poulin probably would be pretty darn good.

I must say, when he left Boston bubble in the middle of play last year for personal reasons, I thought he was done there. I mean, I wonder how his teammates felt.

Don’t think anyone could blame him for that.

What he does though is choke in big games.

Pens would be better off in the bargain bin for Halak or Mrazek.

Or go balls deep on a risk/reward play for Bishop.

I have no trust in signing any UFAs this year just because I think many of them are just waiting until after the expansion draft to re-sign.

Well Boston has 2 young goalies they can go with. Carlo needs a new deal. And they will have to decide on Krejci and Hall.

Did you see the scores that the Pens lost by? "A few more saves" each round is definately the difference between losing in the first round and making it to the cup final

The difference between Jarry's mistakes and the other ones you listed is those other ones they could have overcome. Hard to win when your goalie gives up 8 goals above average in a 6 game series.

So I'll agree there are other areas to look at and improve. But Jarry deserves the blame he is getting.

Lots of discussion about that hit in the last blog's comments if you didnt see....that is an odd rule, for sure, and in person is 5+ I think

Best response in the post game interview:

"Of all the Scheifele – Evans hit reactions so far, Canadiens defenseman Joel Edmundson probably gave the boldest comment.

“It was a dirty hit. But the league’s going to take care of it,” Edmundson said, via ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski. “If he gets back in the series, we’re going to make his life miserable.”"

Kinda goes without saying amongst the players...but if its more of this off the starting whistle BS like the Caps and Rags I'll pass...and it would most likely be something like that. Difference here though of course is its the playoffs, not reg season.

Pretty much agree with everything in the blog. CAN NOT come back with the same tending tandem. Time to fix that is the off-season.

Also agree with the Hextall's comments about the core. Rutherford's season ending comments the last couple of years were embarrassing. The stuff about Schultz were disgraceful for a GM.

Carter is going to be protected.....just like Yohe mentioned.

The league and the Jets I'd say...but the league doesn't care what he says regarding it and will do whatever they want about it.

Is that what they are doing though? I read they want to bridge to their young goalies, but not put the full load on them yet.

I assume they watched the Pens series and don't want to put their playoff hopes in the hands of unproven goaltending.

Ed Zachery! That was an example of "what NOT to do" heading into the playoffs. I honestly had no expectation for this year. I thought IF the Pens get into the playoffs, they'd last 1-2 rounds tops.

No clue what they want to do but I bet Halak is cheaper than Rask and that could play into their decision.

Or O'Connor, or Poulin, or Legare. I'd say those are their 4 top forward prospects and all have size and will be in WBS next year. Looms like hood competition for a 3rd line spot to me. - Tojo

Zohan is soft. Poulin and Légaré it’s hard to say how they will play but I imagine it’s a more Carter style of game, not overly physical, from what games I’ve watched of them in the Q. Bjorqvist is prob a career AHL’r but I’d say he would be the most physical.

I’m hoping for 1 gritty D and 1 forward that can play to their role.

They should of scheduled the expansion draft for June 30th to prevent ufa protection

He's not a physical player, but he's shown the ability to use his size to protect the puck and has surprising speed for a guy his size. I'm not sure where he fits in the lineup though.

Actually now that I thought about it first day of free agency is not July 1st this year.

If the expansion draft is before free agency wouldn’t that mean players who go ufa this year need to be protected still? Say landeskog for example? I might be missing something here. I forgot about the free agency date and thought the expansion draft was after FA but it’s before. The draft is July 21st iirc (from 30 seconds ago) and free agency is on July 28th

Burke was just on Madden

My favorite moment was he said he asked Sully why he didn't play Reeves and Sully told him the whole line was so bad he couldn't trust them on the ice. Can't disagree.

Said his mind had changed since he took the job about the core being finished. Said they have no draft picks and very little coming from WBS so at sone point something has to give but it's not time yet. Will consider extensions for Malkin and Letang.

Not much else different from what Hextall said. Says Sully did too good a job all year to be fired and despite a poor end he thinks Jarry was a main reason they won the division so he's comfortable with the goaltending.

Yohe coming up soon.
