Hmmmm, who among the Flyers disappears every playoff? Maybe their 'best' player too?

My point was people are so petrified over offer-sheet retaliation that they don't realize it's all fair, man.

If you have a good, restricted player who refuses to sign? Either: don't match and take the compensation, trade them, or overpay. It's as simple as that.

But the whole 'gentlemans agreement' to not offer sheet always seemed stupid to me.

Matthew Barzal needs a little maturing for the playoffs. We saw it last year against TB too.

What about Tyson Barrie? He might complement Provy well...should not cost as much as Jones would.

Players are not constants. Their performance varies with usage and age. That Giroux was 1. A much different player, far more creative. 2. Played on the 3rd line till 2012 (?). Was much younger. That Giroux =/ current Giroux.

I would trade Giroux for Barzal today without blinking an eyelid. It won't be close.

The same guy that won 3 cups? Lol, Ok.

My argument is that the usual room that top line players get in the regular season shrinks considerably during the playoffs, that's where depth comes in. Unfortunately, after 2012, Giroux never had that depth.

I’d say more like after 2014. Even with Vinny being a disappointment, that was still a pretty deep team. It was the season after when we traded Hartnell for Umberger, refused to play Vinny and relied pretty heavily on Bellemare and Vandevalde (or so it seemed) that we got more and more thin.

Honestly getting dmen of that quality could be better than going after the big trophy fish. Think Niskanen. Many wrote him off after we traded for him. But he played his role perfectly and it allowed guys like Myers and Sanheim (and Braun) to slide into their own ideal roles. I can’t help but think of Couts sayin in post season presser key guys were lost and we weren’t able to step up / into roles. We all thought Myers and Sanheim would take a step forward this year and they arguably took 2 steps back. Obviously the big fish guys like Jones or Hamilton are better overall players but a veteran like Larson or Savard could allow us to use cap elsewhere to help the team. Also aren’t losing roster guys in a trade since it’s free agency.
- arichardson22

I agree with you overall, except if you are going to sign Larsson and/or Savard, you will need to make trades to clear cap space.

Thinking & HITTING on marginal guys like Niskanen that make or break your team....Are what make GM's great, not the obvious stuff.

Although he did do it once, I have no idea if Fletcher is that guy going forward.

But I have a feeling whatever does happen has not even been considered by all of us so far. And I am fine with moving on from Fletcher after, or during this year if we dont see improvement in the short-term (mid-year).

The combined total points of Giroux-Couts-Voracek will not be too dissimilar from the combined total points of Marchand-bergeron-Pasta past few years. (I did not look this up, so if I am wrong, I am wrong). That team has lacked a 2nd line forever. Yet they always deliver in playoffs.

In 2006, Gangne scored 40+ goals while playing with Knuble and a bunch of AHLers.

To some extent the supporting cast theory works, but only to a certain extent. You cannot have a contending team with current Giroux being one of the best players on it. It is he who must be part of the supporting cast of a much better player, not the other way around.

At this point I don’t know how the Flyers deal for Jones. Maple Leafs have every reason to be in on him and the second they talk Marner we can’t compete with that offer.

In 05-06 the Flyers ran with the Gagne-Forsberg-Knuble line. Their defect was their defense which was too big and too slow against a much faster Sabres team.

This suggestion reminds me of the nasty neighbor who shot my dog when I was a kid.

I have no interest in turning into Toronto. Look where the star-laden forward group got them in the playoffs. I want the Flyers to be patient with Hart and sure-up the defense alongside Provy and whomever else we keep on D. Plus finding a better mix and adding a PKer to the forwards.

So you want top trade 1) probably the worst performing starting goalie last year...2) a prospect who was out most of the year and had surgery who hasnt done much yet and 3) an 8.25M grossly overpaid 1 dimensional forward for 2 top line forwards....Yeah sure Toronto would jump at that...you couldnt get Nylander or Marner for that package no less both

Forsberg played only a few games iirc, or was that the season after? I mean the season we ended up with 50+ points. Gagne got most of those goals on his own without Foppa setting him up. Maybe I misremember exact chronology.
