Chayka is into some weird stuff, apparently the Coyotes had some bizarre mental-based tests that they asked prospects to participate in during interviews. I don't think he was into analytics as much as people think he is, he seems more into sports science and psychology as a whole.
- Nucker101

Wasn't he one of the founders of Stathletes? Regardless, that's his background. He was definitely an analytics guy.

Francesco made JB trade for him.
- VanHockeyGuy

That makes sense. Also made him sign LE from what i've heard.

A lot of his moves confused the "analytics community", I don't deny that he used analytics, but I don't think he was looking at the same analytics that the mainstream looks at, especially the mental aspect which the public will have zero access to since they can't run tests on players.

“That was one thing we had to address right away, but a big piece of this process is a learning piece. The game is evolving and our understanding of the game continues to evolve, whether it is the sports psychology perspective or some of the more quantitative analysis. It’s research that makes you do things differently, even as you are watching the game live. There are experts in their fields that can point you in a different direction so it becomes a bit of an enlightening process for everyone.”

Before Shapiro and Hepso came aboard, Chayka said the Coyotes did not employ anyone who focused specifically on the psychological and skating aspects of prospects in the draft process. Shapiro had worked with Hofford in a variety of capacities, including counseling several of his clients and teaching a sport psychology class at the Hill Academy where Hofford was the hockey director.
Shapiro has been in practice for 20 years as a cognitive behavioral psychotherapist with a specialty in sports psychology. She founded Heads Up High Performance, a high-performance training academy for athletes, she has been the mental performance coach for the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League for the past two years, and she recently released her first book, “Fearless: Inspiring Greatness From Within.”

“I really like to take a holistic approach,” said Shapiro, who met with more than 60 prospects at the NHL scouting combine in May. “I understand that they are hockey players and obviously that’s a driving force in their life, but I’m trying to learn more about them. I’m trying to look at them as a whole person. When they take off all the equipment, what drives how they think? I’m always looking for their underlying thinking patterns and looking at their behavioral responses to discover who they really are.”

Shapiro’s process includes interviews, evaluation and scoring in a variety of areas to create a more complete profile of a player.
“Sometimes people support what I do and sometimes I get a little flak for it, but for me talent is somewhat overrated,” she said. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that you don’t need the skills to do what you do out there. Of course you do, but you might have two people of equal skill and talent level and only one guy that’s got the heart and the determination and the ability to bounce back from adversity — which is a key for me — versus somebody that doesn’t have that heart or breaks down and is not able to bounce back and continue to keep pushing and moving forward. The path to get to the NHL is not an easy one so we need people that are gritty and able to persevere through adversity.”

Sedins may have had some influence there as well, just speculating because they had success playing with him on the National team.

Could be. They may also have some impact on this years draft as well.

Well to be honest making sure a player has their head on straight is also more important to me than their corsi.

Judging by the Yotes drafts, all those mental tests didn't exactly pay off. But hey, at least we know Barrett Hayton is a nicer kid than Quinn Hughes

C'mon. It wasn't all based on mental tests and analytics ignored. Mental tests were incorporated into analytics as in i'll one up it.

So it really wasn't truly analytics based then, it was a collective process. I highly doubt he totally ignored the scouts eye tests as well. So it's much more likely that analytics were just a piece of the pie rather than being the central focus.
