Because I was wondering, top 20 paid players draft order:

1. 1st
2. Not drafted
3. 1st
4. 15th
5. 2nd
6. 1st
7. 4th
8. 5th
9. 1st
10. 3rd
11. 11th
12. 2nd
13. Undrafted
14. 2nd
15. 1st
16. 129th
17. 19th
18. 2nd
19. 178th
20. 58th

Interesting.

60% of the top 20 paid players from the first 5 picks.

Who are the undrafted?

I extrapolated your fact into an inference, that paying for a top player reduces your chances for a cup instead of enhancing it. I further outlined that in general, it is the players chosen with the first few selections of the first round who generally get paid in the top 10. Additionally, that the best place for a team hoping to one day win the cup is in the coveted 16-19 slot.

I believe I have been able to make fun of several people in one post here.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Those crafty Russians

Edit - something interesting looking at that list of players is how guys like Ovi and Malkin are still so high up the list even though they signed those deals when the cap was so much lower. They were really being paid at the top then.

I would imagine that it will take the league a long while to grow enough that salaries will eclipse Matthews, Marner et al.

This is not necessarily true, there are plenty of top 5 or top 10 draft picks who are high quality players who are not overpaid.

That isn’t at all what I said. I said “in general that the players being paid in the top 10 came from the first five selections”. As NYN pointed out, of the top 20 paid players (cap hit) 60% were a top five selection. I think my generalization is very true.

The best players are picked top5, they are the most likely to get paid highest. No surprises there imo

Sorry, I read your post as the inverse, that players drafted at the top are consistently paid more than everyone else.

It's easy to not be Toronto, just don't let your top end players bend you over in contract negociations. 9 of the top 20 paid players are on non-playoff teams. 7 more got knocked out in the first round.

I know most of us don't have a lot of faith left in JB but I really hope he doesn't (frank) up the Petey/Hughes contracts. With Bo and Brock making under 6 mil, you have to think he will be able to keep their numbers at a reasonable mark.

Yes, this is what the original joke was. Ruby posted some facts about Price being the only player in the top 10 in league salary still playing and I suggested it would be best for the Canucks to finish 16-19, so they don’t end up with a player that might get paid in the top 10 in the future. Demonstrating once again what a genius Benning is.

He only has two years left, I doubt ownership lets him go long on anything. What’s the bridge that keeps them as RFA, 3 years?

As long as he doesn’t go 4 so that they’re UFA’s at the end...

Marner for Seth Jones? Straight up?

Or how about Marner for Markstrom and Tanev.

I suspect 3 years will be the length for sure. I read something on twitter saying they wanted to go long on Hughes but I suspect their agent will want them coming up at the same time again.

Sounds like the NBs are coming back but they are adding a coach to replace Manny. Maybe Raffi torres?
- manvanfan

That really pisses in my corn flakes.

I don’t complain about much but I’d like to know what they’ve done to be rehired?

Does TG want them or JB or both?

I guess I could live with Brown maybe but Baumer Idk why cuz the D just doesn’t get it done.

10, 9, 9, 9, 10, 9, 10, 9, 9, 10, 9, 2

I simmed it a bunch more times until the Canucks got 1OA... but in that time Chicago got 1OA once and 2OA twice

- NewYorkNuck

In 10 spins only 10th once & 9th every other time. Besides in that range it’s either a good F drops or take a goalie by the looks of it.

Wallstedt likely gone to the Wings imo but Cossa still there. Trade MDP in a package that opens up cap etc be only reason a goalie taken.

I didn't read back, that's pretty good. Im hoping for 2oa. Not greedy. Lots of choice at 2 this year imo, would be a fun one to have.

A soft overpaid winger isn’t getting a top pair D. Only Panarin & Kane are legit to command something close to that imo. Drai is a no brainer but never happens.

The thing going for the Leafs if they decide to deal him: front loaded so a lot of actual money has been paid; his NTC doesn’t kick in for a few more years.
