Love when these kind of things are brought up without any perspectives. MacKinnion signed that contract after being rather ordinary in his 1st 3 seasons and many were saying he wouldn't live up to his draft position. It was until his 5th season that he exploded into the player he has become.

It was also his 2nd contract. He won't be cheap anymore.

It all comes down to what you consider success. The only success I deem valid are cups. Anything else is just window dressing. That said, I think saying you would trade a cup for being competitive now is ludicrous. It is insanely difficult to win a cup. To say you would give one up for the chance to be "competitive" now is insane to me. Great, the Bruins are competitive. How exciting is it when they lose in the 2nd round or conf finals?
