I’d be fine with the whiney portion of the fanbase to go there.

Better off to have the critical fans who are more educated. Having fans who can say the good & bad beats the eff outta the 1 dimensional pouters.

They could have taken this approach for the last 7 seasons and not been much worse.
- RealityChecker

Even if they did take that approach, do you think some fans would see things differently right now or would they still just see the same thing more and more losses?

I think that if John Weisbrod isn't going to succeed Jim Benning that he should be fired and someone new is brought in to be the asst and take over when Jim is gone.

I wouldn’t want JW. New blood I like.

Then again the other angle is that an expansion franchise could garner blind loyalty for 5-10 years. If we lost those guys maybe the fans could hold the franchise to a higher standard.

Kinda works both ways.

I understand that fans are frustrated. But people talking about jumping ship can GO (frank) themselves. How do you think Cleveland Browns fans feel? We ain’t got it that bad. The team will be good again. So every whiner STFU

Team needs to see the steps the youth have taken next season before blindly throwing money at overpaid free agents. Just wait till the waiver wire at the start of the year to find what's missing.
- manvanfan

Steps yes if earned. Not filling in the bottom 6 on kids alone. There are none to take on the 3C spot.

I was talking about the Pens, but sure, I'm not sure what John W does really. I mean, ok, he's an AGM, so he assists, but typically these guys have a specialization, like contract law, so they understand the CBA etc.

But with 35 mil in cap, a young core; the fans could rightly say that now would be the time to make moves.

Now would be the time to start looking at the bigger ticket items and the higher profile trades to complement the young and developing core.

But to be at that point, you need a lot of cap space and a young core. The brightside of being inept is that JB has built a nice core mostly through the draft... so glass half full at his failure to do much beyond draft.

During the Chicago Blackhawks decade where they made the playoffs once they went through 8 coaches. Oilers during their 10 year stretch without the playoffs went 7 coaches. Too much.
- manvanfan

Not talking about getting rid of Green as he has a contract. Don't bring back Baum and Brown, get new voices and eyes and systems to add to/improve what is there.

Not like the Canucks are 4 for 4 under them all. 1 playoff appearance in 4 years ain't great.

Sorry, Hextall will want to start the rebuild as soon as possible. That will include a new coaching staff.

Referring to the Canucks about the same situation as I kind of did. It would be nice to have someone with as you said contract law, maybe learn a little bit more of the scouting side from Benning before taking over. Be a more complete GM than Benning. Or hire a President to overlook everyone like Burke is.

It's not all kids, they have Motte, Beagle, Roussel, Highmore who are under contract already for next season.

Can you provide an example of a team that had steadily progressed over a 7 year period and went onto success? A team in a more recent era say the past 20 years.

I'm only asking because I have looked at probably every team and I haven't found what you are looking for.

- manvanfan

Shanahan was hired at the same time as Benning... sooooo.... that? Just off the top of my head.

Where’s the line between being whiny and having high expectations? Are the fans not allowed to have expectations, especially after 50 years of mediocrity?

Was this subtle?

He was the AGM during the Ryan O'Reilly offersheet.

So to answer your question, I'm guessing CBA expert.

I would like to see a steady progression towards competitiveness over the last seven years. That progression is the result of a well thought out plan implemented during the GMs first season in charge. Generally referred to as “vision”.

As a fan is that too much to ask for? Are my expectations too unrealistic? I guess some Canuck fans are so used to losing that winning is a bizarre fantasy.

- bloatedmosquito

So if you were told we're going to trade all our players for draft picks. Buy bad contracts for more picks. Lose for a decade to win later, is that visionary?

If the core has never developed the same way the Oilers previous core never did? (just an example) What do you do then?

Who says the bigger ticket items would be then available at the exact time you want them?

Your situation seems to exclude many variables.

Let's try to thread the facts. Found it funny that the article you posted about your Krak had Green as a coaching candidate. Then you get the thread going on a dance of dislike. Perhaps that's the system?

Like I've said you can want someone else. There are others with better records and more experience. Though been told fit goes a long way to working a team to buy in and improve.

- NuckUp

Awesome more FACTS, love facts. So the article had mentioned Green as a candidate, there were others mentioned also, but I guess your focus is that Green is mentioned so he must be the leading coach for the position before Benning scoped him up.

So if fit goes a long way, Green is obviously the perfect fit for a losing club, 298 regular season games coached in Vancouver, only 125 wins, great fit, but of course I forgot about the schedule, covid and injuries.

Have you ever explained what are the systems that Green uses, if you have I must have missed that post, could you post the systems again, thanks in advance.

Big ticket players are always there. The names and positions change but either through UFA or trade, there are players available that can help a team win now, every season.

Does this mean that the pieces a team needs are always there, every year? Of course not. That's the point of having cap flexibility. Keep cap space and use it when needed.

The point is not to max your cap every fcuking season just because you got money left in your wallet.

And Edmonton is a great example of bringing in the wrong players to help the young core. Also a great example of how bad management dooms a franchise even if the draft provides young superstars.

Roussel will be beaten out.
Beagle maybe LTIRetire.

Need is still a legit 3C.
Sutter at 4C be fine if cheap.
Graovac my choice.
