Funny they used to say that about Tanev and worse. Amazing how players not on the Canucks become shiny toys. While once on Nuck roster the slurping starts on their turd ratio.
- NuckUp

I doubt very much you ever heard me criticize Tanev, even with him now on the Flames. He is a fantastic defenseman.

Using the Avalanche as an example, they picked Lanesboro in 2011, 2nd OA, I believe and in 2019 picked Byram 4th OA, with many other high picks in between, so that is 9 years of drafting.
- Reubenkincade

09- Duchene 3oa
10- Hishon 17 oa
11- Landeskog 2oa
12- Heard 41oa Traded 11oa for Varlamov
13- Mackinnon 1oa (enter Sakic)
14- Bleackley 23oa
15- Ratanen 10oa
16- Jost 10oa
17- Makar 4oa
18- Kaut 16oa
19- Byram 4oa, Newhook 16oa
20- Barron 25oa

10 top 20 picks

Van has 6 top 20 picks during that same time.

Horvat drafted in 2013, so two years after.

Byram was chosen with Ottawa's pick, not Colorado's. Colorado got back into the playoffs regularly in 17-18. So, depending on when you want to choose them turning the corner, it's about 6 years. Canucks currently at 8.

As Minvan posted, Duchen was a 3OA from 2 years before, who was traded to Ottawa for the Byram pick. I was going to start with Duchesne, but decided not to, as he was essentially flipped for another top pick, in Byram.

Edit; Duchesne was picked 2 years before Landeskog so it is still 9 drafts.

Not going to split hairs about whether it is 8 or 9 drafts.

I think they do for two more years, about the same time his KHL deal expires, so he’s virtually worthless. Why give something up if you can wait the weekend and then negotiate.
- 1970vintage

Same reasons teams trade for UFA rights before deadline to have exclusivity to sign. An e-draft expendable player might be worth a Tree plus B prospect. Also, the team he's signed with is more open to buyouts. It comes down to perceived value and fit so a Panthers/Caps/Rangers might be open.

That's a very arbitrary time window to choose, what made you go back to 2009? The Canucks were winning banners and Pres Cups at that point, so ya they wouldn't have high picks.

Out of pure curiosity and not trying to poke, what is your timeline?

I can only take the Canucks now from JB's timeline, and that's to be competitive/playoffs the last couple years and moving forward... which clearly isn't happening, and it sets up bad paradigms of buying when they shouldn't just to make the playoffs, and that in turn limits their future.

- NewYorkNuck

My timeline isn't a perfect set up because teams start timelines at different times with all different player personnel.

The most basic way to say it out is 3 years to the bottom, year 3 and 4 remain at the bottom year 5 start to go upwards slowly, year 7 is a mixed bag. Meaning it could go well, it could go bad but core players should be there. Year 8, should be back into playoffs. Core players are best players and secondary draft picks should be surfacing to take roles.

Suck again year 8, GM should be fired.

Getting a single 3oa pick didn't help them stay in the playoffs.

Sort of the same as Van in 2014 when Van picked 6th made the playoffs then struggled after that.

Since then they have picked 10 times in the top 20. Van has picked 6 times.

The Sedin's won't fix the apathy with this team. The brand is damaged.

Do you think if the Canucks do well next season that the fans that feel the brand is damaged, will return?

If they make the playoff's yes. It's going to be tough for them to sell seasons tickets this summer though.

The non-twitter portion of this fanbase dwarfs the Twitter chicken littles. They still have faith, they acknowledge that this off-season is crucial but they’re still cautiously optimistic

Media garbage and bulls!t. I mean look in here we have Petey punching this and that and Miller/Schmidt unhappy...players not showing for exit meetings/interviews the drawing of conclusions is massive. But we all assume we know what's going on in MNGT and in the room...

Winning solves a lot of issues.

That said, it'd take an entire season of winning. A few weeks of play like they had this year, and the voices will get louder and louder and the chants will start. It's a short leash.

If what was posted earlier – hire back Brown and Baum and let Clarke go – is true, I think it will set the Canucks back a few years more. The coaching is terrible save for the goalie, so why do the opposite of what is logical?

Because Aquilini won’t pay him what he wants. It is what it is

Well if this happens in Seattle my new team will be in the playoffs in their first year.

Best coach in the NHL, Green is the worst or close to it.

Funny they started with Green as a Kraken coach. Your opinion duly noted even though confused about systems.
