this is 100% motivated by trying to calculate the least backlash from the Rangers/fans/etc. Could have been more (probably should have if you look at it outside of the context of the Wilson poop). They clearly were going to suspend because they warned everyone before the game and couldnt back down by only giving him a fine a la Wilson. They backed themselves into a no win situation

Mantha didn't even get hurt! They set the benchmark at a $5000 fine.
How was what Buch did (it LOOKED real bad) worse than what Wilson did?? How can it possibly bring stiffer punishment?

take a minute to reread what i said. i said if you look at it in a vacuum, it's a suspendable offense. I think wilson should've gotten the book thrown at him, like most people. He's a clear and present danger every time he laces up his skates and i hope he steps on legos barefoot every day for the rest of his life.

My point was that this was the least offensive punishment they could give to Buch without backing off of their pregame message to the teams. They calculated that this would be the punishment that would blow over the quickest. they talk about "precedent and history and injury severity blah blah blah" but none of that makes sense here. Precedent shows that sometimes players get away with crosschecking to the face and sometimes they dont (inconsistent), Buch has no history of this, and Mantha was not injured. They're flying by the seat of their pants
