oh yeah absolutely, but there was nothing "nursing a rebuild" about any time of his tenure from 2000 until he left to go into semi-retirement

Sather has his mind set on what it takes to build a winning hockey team, and its certainly not just throwing a bunch of kids out there and letting them grow

Well Gorton said he wouldn't do that either. Gotta admit...he kind of did

In Gorton's defense, he really had no choice due to Covid and not having a "real" NHL/AHL season to work w/

Are team next year is going to be a great team to compete in the 1993 NHL
- TPC

I think there's waaaaay more of a chance of acquiring Eichel now than there was a week ago

the 2001 Lindros trade all over again, complete with trading for a guy coming off a significant injury

But are we even sure he is making the calls in the end? Sather babysitting him on this opening press conference is pretty telling.

It's one thing to be named GM, but to get the Presidents tag to. Why does he need Sather on this call if he is "the man"

- TPC

I really hope that Drury is making the calls and he has a backbone, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, what choice do we have?

My question is why, after all these years ignoring the Rangers, does Dolan stick his beak in now?

I get that having guys like Jagr, Nylander, etc isn't a rebuild. However, we can't pretend guys like Hank, Cally, Girardi, etc were vets when they came to the team. Those guys all had to be developed and inserted in the core of the franchise.

i honestly wouldnt care about this at all if it was essentially a swap of drury/gorton.

but JD - i'm still absolutely stunned. He had the clout and rep to keep sather et al. in check, or so i though. removing JD and having sathers one step closer to the GM scares the poop out of me

He might be looking at the "success" the Knicks are having this year and decided it's time to make his other team "successful".

I believe you are overthinking this.
Is Drury going to introduce and congratulate himself on this promotion? There is never just one guy on camera.

Well the story is that JD kind of forced Dolan's hand by jumping on his sword rather than firing Gorton

he also probably is bored that the Knicks are doing so well and needed to get his hands involved in something

if the Knicks were still bad this doesn't happen

If only his band was allowed to play shows during the pandemic, he wouldn't have time for this

I read a review about his band that was hilarious. The person said Dolan sings like he's trying not to cough.

I wonder where Gorton and JD go from here. I can't imagine that their stature around the league is diminished in any way. I suspect that Gorton won't be long without a job. Davidson is 68, though. Does he just ride off into the sunset or does he take another gig somewhere?

Its weird for me to say this, but I feel for Rangers fans here (yeah.. Flyers fan with empathy. who would've thought?) First you guys had your team assaulted by Tommie and the Bumholes, and now the owner is taking a heel turn, flipping tables, and firing perfectly competent and undeserving employees... and threatening what has been to this point a promising re-build.

From an outsider's view, this just looks super surreal.

Gorton will get a job almost immediately, maybe JD takes a job with Turner in their new TV deal

It's why i respect JD more, they had a plan together. Wasn't going to let Gorton take the sword on his own.

Yup....A real stand up guy. Just bad timing on Dolan. I totally understand him and Gorton/JD disagreeing on progress of team, but to fire them now, after such a wierd year and a half seems half cocked.

Well you are talking about the same guy who wants to ban fans that aren't happy with his teams success or lack thereof.

I am still shocked cause I always thought Dolan liked good press. All season everyone was saying how much talent this team has and how the future was bright. Everyone was giving the franchise gold stars for their rebuild work.

I'm with you on that. However, if someone would have said three years ago that we would add Panarin and he'd live up to every penny of his contract, add a Norris finalist on the back end, and have back to back top 2 picks, you might have expected better results too. What JD was admirable, but at some point, Gorton's record was pretty mediocre here.

I think the best thing as fans we can hope for is that he s the modern day version of Dale Tallon, and if Drury replaces him can finish the job.

I think we also have to consider one other thing.

How much do Dolan and Sather like Drury to be the GM of the Rangers that they were willing to blow this up just to make sure he didnt leave them for another team?

This team is very one dimensional. No reason why Gorton/JD couldn't have replenished the cupbords, and add some gritty/talented guys in draft/FA/trades.

I know Messier was being self serving in his comments, but he is absolutely right with the "playing in the street and alley" comment.

It was a tough balancing act, no doubt, and if we are completely honest....w/out some bingo ball luck, we wouldn't have Kakko or Laff. Subtract them and would we all be loving Gorton/JD?

And please don't discuss Schneider..That guy won't be relevent for 2+ years.

good press sure - but that doesnt equate to playoff games (and the money that comes w/ it).

maybe he saw this season as yes, we have a great prospect pool, but they are so far and away from competing w/ the upper echelon teams in this division and got spooked.

honestly, i saw the same. they arent close yet.
