I also think he was pissed he was paying Tony 10 million just to sit at home. I honestly think there is a chance he is back now next year - TPC
I don't know, I still think Tony D's buyout number is so good that it will give the team a lot of cap space to fill the needs they see the team needing

Reasons for firing:
*ADA Fiasco
*Not making enough progress in Dolan's eyes from last year
*Getting rolled by Isles
*Looking weak
*Disagreement over letter - rrentz
Oh Jeez I forgot about ADA, Thats another 5 mill he is losing. Worst thing about ADA was that just signed him and 2 months later they are paying him to stay home. Why wasnt he traded before hand?? |

No where if all thing stay the same. I guess it would depend on who is moved and what is brought back. Not trying to over simplify it. - climbdenali12
I know what you mean. But with Trouba and Fox as fixtures on the right side there is literally no where for him at his current salary.

I agree, it is the smart thing to do here. But with Dolan having a more involved role is the smart decision going to be made? Is Drury going to walk out after a month of arguing over the right decisions this off season? |

Does that matter anymore? He is paying him good money to sit at home |

This is hard to argue with. He was tradeable but they decided to sign him which ended up being a mistake. As we go back through all of this, there did appear to be quite a few mistakes made that just added up over time. |

The Rangers had a plan, Dolan didn't like the plan. We got to stop thinking with logic. Anything could happen this summer, good or bad and it won't surprise me one bit anymore. |

Also TNT and ESPN already picking away TV talent
Eddie Olczyk signed a 5 year deal to be TNTs main hockey analyst
Ray Ferraro looks like he is going to be ESPNs main analyst. No deal yet though. |

I do want to say I am happy with how the team came out last night. I was not expecting any of that except for maybe Smith taking on Wilson. They showed a lot with their actions. |

yeah, I mean, everything I believed was based around the fact that I believed that JD and Gorton had a plan, were going to stick to the plan and certainly weren't going to let a bit of a hiccup in a Covid shortened season that will never happen again cause the whole thing to be blown apart
but that's where we are

Just have to hope Drury has enough sense not to go to crazy. But if Dolan/Sather are pushing him to, can't see this ending well |

I just wish Trouba was playing, he would have thrown a bigger open ice hit and been a better fight partner for Wilson |

I mean, Drury was courted often for GM positions in the past couple of years, so it's not like the Rangers made Dan Blackburn GM. |

This part of it does not really bother me. It's that fact that Dolan now feels the need to mess with something he knows nothing about. Also not thrilled that Sather is involved. |

I'll be the first to say Sather's era has passed, but people forget at least in the cap era, the guy did preside over perhaps the best stretch of hockey san cup in the franchise's history. The period from about 08-11 were meh, but they were a solid contender pretty much the whole time.

But are we even sure he is making the calls in the end? Sather babysitting him on this opening press conference is pretty telling.
It's one thing to be named GM, but to get the Presidents tag to. Why does he need Sather on this call if he is "the man" |

That is true but like you said, he's a (frank)ing relic. Hopefully he's learned something from all the watching he's been doing. If he comes in and presides over smart/shrewd moves I am not going to complain. If he comes in and gives Chara 4+ mil per then we have a problem. |

Does anyone think that this offseason Gorton/JD would've of put together a team ready to compete for a playoff spot and be a Stanley Cup contender? Obviously, Dolan didn't.
There seemed to be a disconnect on how what the "rebuild" meant |

Because Sather will be turning Drury into his own personal hand puppet. |

Yep, which is why its hard to know if any moves going forward are actually Drury at all.

It’s been a tough couple of days for sure but as much as I despise Dolan I think this was going to happen with or without the Wilson debacle. As much as I hate seeing jd and gorton fired I think getting slapped by the islanders was the last straw. Hope drury keeps sather at arms length and realizes this team is far from one or two over the hill veterans away from contending for a cup. It’s going to be an interesting summer for sure! |

oh yeah absolutely, but there was nothing "nursing a rebuild" about any time of his tenure from 2000 until he left to go into semi-retirement
Sather has his mind set on what it takes to build a winning hockey team, and its certainly not just throwing a bunch of kids out there and letting them grow |
