Huh. I guess he was too cool in High Fidelity although they’re all kind of the same movie - Canada Cup
I kinda went a-googling - read a few things about Cameron Crowe.
I've never seen Elizabethtown, so I went on Rotten Tomatoes to see if it was worth watching.
Let's just say that website is not kind to the movie.
I think I'll just watch Singles again.
And word to the wise: don't try to watch Almost Famous again. It's franking creepy.

Biden is going to support waiver of Intellectual Property property property protection for covid vaccines. Big deal for eradicating or at least controlling this internationally. - Canada Cup
Always a good idea to steal the intellectual property from the organizations that saved us from a worldwide pandemic.
I'm sure they will be happy to put in the time and effort to create a vaccine for the next pandemic. |

Facts are your friend. The development of the mRNA vaccine was well funded by government. The top executives at Moderna pulled in a cool $100 in bonuses and stick sales when the company was re-valued last year. Who knows how many hundreds of billions the biggies have added in revenues from Covid.
So no, they’re not being crushed under the heavy foot of government. They did great work, with lots of support and were very, very well rewarded. There’s no way that poor countries can afford to pay full freight for vaccines and there’s no way we can afford to have have the globe unvaccinated. |

High Fidelity and Say Anything are pretty far removed from one another.
Hell, he ends up with a blonde in the former and a brunette in the other. Totally different.
But I guess there's like music, girls, and stuff in those movies. So all the same(ish)? |

Pfizer didn't take any government money.
Regardless - this doesn't change the fact that these organizations will be less willing to invest in R&D for new vaccines if they know their patent will be stolen at a moments notice.
The far, far simpler solution would have been to negotiate a licensing fee for vaccines produced by third parties. The first world can pay for it, these vaccines really aren't expensive at all.
But I guess some people default to just taking sh!t that is supposed to be protected.

I feel sorry for you damn kids.
You have no nostalgia for TV shows of your childhood.
You want to know why?
Because if something was crap, you just didn't watch it. You watched something else.
We didn't have that luxury. There were three channels: ABC, CBS, NBC. Hell, Fox didn't come along until my teens, and their first few years were absolute crap. 21 Jump Street? Herman's Head? The Late Show with Joan Rivers?
But hey, you ask, didn't Canada make shows too?
Hangin' In. Danger Bay. The Trouble with Tracy.
I watched them all. Because I had no choice.
So go frank off while me and MonkeyPunk riff on Love Boat and Baywatch.

Elizabethtown was pretty cringey when it came out, can't imagine how bad it would be today. Probably not as rapey as Almost Famous though...

It basically starts with Luke Wilson committing statutory rape.

Pfizer didn't take money from the states. But its partner took money that developed the technology took money from Germany.
These companies may grumble and may not make as much as they would have but they still had hundreds of billions of dollars of revenues in a very short period of time.
The first world is still going to help pay for vaccines developed by third parties. I would guess that they have been trying for some time to negotiate a different approach. Biden has been criticized for moving so slowly on this. This approach has the added benefit of moving out vaccine development capabilities. There's still nobody else who can manufacture this stuff right now. Maybe things still get negotiated.
The whole question of the protection of pharma IP is a huge debate anyway so its not an automatic "taking shat that is supposed to be protected". Protecting the interests of the companies and their commitment to further R&D always has to be balanced with protecting access to drugs. Looking at the cost of drugs in the States shows who's winning that fight.
Either way, these guys made out just fine and wouldn't hesitate for a second to jump back in again. The promise of magic pill in demand around the world is too big a deal.

Just a cartoon image with the other Morgan (Freeman) voice over. Don't worry, Jonathan, just wait till you get to Detroit.

A few things..
IP isnt the biggest barrier here - biggest issue is that our governments have basically desinvested from vaccine r&d and manufacturing over the last 40 years.
Vaccine manufacturing is tough and tech transfer can take up to a few years. It isnt like making some Ikea furniture..
Can't blame pharma companies for wanting to make money, it's their whole raison d'etre.
(Amazon guy is making a bigger load of money during the pandemic, there really isn't a big difference there.).
Have to blame our governments for complete failure over the last decades. I sat down many times with government officials last 10years on how vaccines and essential drugs, diagnostics etc are crucial to people's well-being and the economy and therefor our governments should take responsibilities - and they just didn't want to understand it.
Sure, the Pfizer management making millions of bonuses on a mediocre vaccine is absurd. Government leaders sleeping away on healthcare while pissing away billions on non essential programs is way worse though.
