They Leafs are very poor at getting goalies. I cant think of a team that has been more inept at drafting goalies.

id be interested to see where the Leafs rank. I feels like they havent drafted a lot of goalies overall, which would mean not many pan out.

re goalies

Found this from 2000-2014

Leafs have not drafted many, but they hit on more than average.

drafting a goalie and keeping them (rask) is a different thing, which probably skews peoples views on how the Leafs did drafting goalies..which looks not bad

The only good goalie we drafted in the last 20 years we traded away Its pretty sad when James Reimer is the best goalie you kept from your drafting.

2020 - Artur Akhtyamov
2018 - Zachary Bouthillier
2017 - Ian Scott
2016 - Joseph Woll
2013 - Antoine Bibeau
2011- Garret Sparks
2008 - Grant Rollheiser
2006 - James Reimer
2005 - Tuukka Rask
2004 - Justin Pogge
2002 - Todd Ford
2001 - Jan Chovan
2000 -Jean-Francois Racine, Mikael Tellqvist

To pretend every or almost every game the Leafs lost was because of goaltender is equally silly in my opinion but it's just my biased, goalie loving opinion.

And for the record I personally have never said it was never a problem? The only time I said pretty much nothing is when the savior had his 5 game skid because the "Freddy wife" hate I knew I'd get wasn't worth the aggravation to me.

Yes - like all teams the Leafs had stretches of poor goal tending this year, including by Freddy, Jack, Hutch and Big Sieve Dave. I am looking at the glass half full view that 1 or 2 of those 4 will be able to provide at least average / solid goal tending for the playoffs. I'm also really praying we don't see a repeat of last year where our dynamic goal scoring shriveled up to George Costanza 'the water was cold, there was shrinkage' levels (a la, don't score a single goal twice in a 5 game series).

I don’t have the energy to get into the goalie thing although it will be interesting to see which goalie in the Leaf’s system gets to most negative scrutiny tonight.

I’m less concerned on the goal scoring issue. For one, the Leafs don’t simply rely on running up goals to win. (They have the best GA in the Division even with the league’s worst goalie). Secondly, a lot of teams played them the way that CBJ did last year - heavy forecheck and clog up centre ice and the Leafs did a pretty job working through it (by far most goals even with a PP that fell apart)

We differ on what’s a good goal and what’s not. Oh well...🤷🏻‍♂️

Not a big deal.

Travis Dermott on Auston Matthews:

"Seeing Auston day in and day out, he's as pro as you can get, as elite as you can get. So it's pretty special to be able to watch a guy like that as closely as we can. It makes everyone want to play better."

Isn't it also true that sometimes goalies do better at the NHL level, due to more structure to the game?

This is my optimistic take. At some point they will need to throw Woll in there for a few games to see what they have. I don't think you can get the whole picture at the AHL level.

- Aetherial

Maybe? However I don't believe many goalies who are average to below average in the AHL pan out to be legit starters in the NHL - guess we will see because your right at some point they need to throw Woll some games and see what they might have in him.

It's true - the Leafs goalie scout(s) have clearly done a terrible job. As far as who might have been worse than the Leafs - Philly maybe? Not having a good goalie seems to have been a thing there forever too.

Edit after looking at cool graphic thingy with # of goalies drafted, where and what # of games they played at NHL level. Kind of really paints the picture that drafting a goalie seems to either be a total crap shoot or something very few teams have really figured out.

Ducks seem to have a good strategy on this.

Isn't this a skewed way of looking at things though? For Pittsburgh, they have literally had Fleury playing 70% of their games during that time, so the % of the others hitting 200 games would be so limited to almost not be in the conversation.

I'd like to see an NHL GM have the balls to spend 10+ draft picks in one same year all on goalies.

let's say 2 1st rounders, a 2nd rounder, 2 3rd rounder and later picks -- all goalies drafted.

the chances on solving your future goaltending problem should be pretty pretty good.

The most encouraging part of this season for the Leafs is that they really have not had many games where they totally crapped the bed. You can look at nearly all their losses and point to well below-average goaltending.

I suggested that my daughter shoot a tiktok video - do a human pooping like a dog.

Run to one bathroom, make like you are going to sit down, nope, run to other bathroom, make like you are going to sit down, nope, run back to first bathroom, then down to basement, then back up to 2nd bathroom, then back to first bathroom, shut the door.

Kid didn't think it was funny.

Stupid kids.

Why bother drafting many goalies, there always seems to be some available for cheap.

**EDITED TO MAKE ACCURATE REGARDING DRAFTS, FA SIGNINGS AND TRADES**

Draft 'schmaft - 2 of the 3 best Leafs goalies ever (in my lifetime) came from free agent signings (as someone astutely pointed out Potvin was drafted by Toronto).

Cujo
Eddie the Eagle
Felix the Cat

Hey wait a minute - maybe I have unlocked the Caramilk secret to drafting goalies - they need an animal nickname!

poop - we don't have any of those right now :-(

New ? - do we rename our current goalies to give them new animal nicknames or go on the hunt for new goalies?

Freddy Flounder Andersen (I'm sure many here will love this clever nickname)

Jack-a-lope Campbell

Dave "The Raccoon" Rittich (because trash pandas are cute sometimes and loveable but eat trash and are very problematic most of the time)

Mike "Hermit Crab" Hutchinson (hides from public view, generally not seen and certainly when seen not viewed as lovable or desirable as a pet. More of a 'huh look at that a crab'. + Crabs make people of ill repute instantly scratch their naughty bits).

OK I'll stop and go back to doing some actual work now....maybe.

Because teams like Washington keep the revolving door of young goalies and remain competitive while getting high end assets for the guys they're kicking out? (Anaheim did the same).

True, but you can still grab good goalies cheap. Caps had Holtby forever.

Philly has a history of bringing in good goalies, ruining them, and then having them succeed somewhere else.
