Well Karine is suggesting they act with a little more courage.

Seems better to try that than... just give up and hope no one dies.

so, let's not talk about it, pretend nothing like this is ever going to happen again and not care if the league doesn't try to evolve or improve anything? sorry but that sounds pretty dumb to me...also maybe it isn't that Karine has "less talent" for other subjects, just that you don't agree with this particular one lol...

I believe it’s very possible to strike a balance between keeping the physicality in hockey and making it less dangerous at the same time.

Wilson can keep his game almost exactly the same and just not pull the dangerous stunts he did last night.

Hains: Time for a Change

Today, the NHL Player Safety Department issued a $5000 fine to Tom Wilson and set hockey Twitter alight in the process.

- Karine Hains

Gonna say this - that Rangers' release took balls, but I am glad someone is finally taking a stand. Yeah, it is in self-interest, but it is (as you put it) fundamentally an issue at the core of the way the NHL does business and the whole "old boys club" mentality that still even exists today.

Listen, Parros is not an idiot - far from it - he is a highly intelligent person, not your typical neanderthal goon from the NHL's past. But he has proven today that the old school mentality of the NHL when it comes to player safety and accountability is too ingrained in him (and the player safety department) to be in the position he currently occupies.

And I suspect when (not if) the Rangers get fined for some stupid amount of money, the hypocrisy of their fine vs the $5,000 Wilson had to pay is going to trigger some form of change.

That change needs to happen.

The only problem is that the NHL has historically failed to live up to enforcing changes to the full extent, or at the very least, so inconsistently applied changes to actual infractions, that my faith in them to make meaningful change and execute on it is very low.

Why fight Wilson? Create a scrum and then cheapshot Backstrom. It should only cost 5k

It's getting to the point with the lack of player safety and the pathetic officiating that players will have to police themselves and do whatever it takes to protect themselves.

I wonder if that was the point of the press release, to be honest.

If nothing else, when there is such idiocy as there was last night, both the player AND the team should be fined, and appropriate amounts. Maybe then coaches and teams will reign in their goons on their own, and suspend them, or even have a clause for contact termination for repeat infractions.

Washington was likely embarrassed last night, but will never come out and trash their own player when they're essentially stuck with him. Maybe if they had to pay, too, it might be a bit different.

What goes on in Wilson's head? I don't want to pile on the guy but that was just about as stupid as anything I've ever seen. And for what? With his record the league should suspend him for the rest of this season. At the very least. And I love a good clean scrap with two willing combatants. Would the Caps even appeal? Five grand? Seriously

I think the fine should be a set percentage of the players contract. This deters idiots of all skill levels from doing stupid poop. 1% minimum, 5% maximum, or something to that effect.

1. Wilson is a dirty dirty player with a history of being an idiot.
2. He threw a couple punches at Buch’s head? Nope. Threw a punch and hit him in the shoulder blade.
3. Buch was defenceless, yes. So a punch to back of head would have been egregious. But it was to shoulder. Maybe a game cause it’s Wilson.
4. Roughing up one of the best players in league - terrible and worth of a game just out of principle. Breaks code. But not based on actions alone.
5. Wilson is scummy. Hate him.
6. Kept gloves on and rag dolled an opposing player that jumped on his back as a third man in. That player happened to be Panerin (one of best in league) so I agree, not great. If he did what he did to Panerin to a less talented player - kept gloves on, wrestled to ice, (they both) threw a couple gloves to face washes/punchish, tried to jersey with gloves on pushed back, etc., not suspension worthy. I have seen much much worse, just not on a player as good as Panerin...at least recently.
7. Technically, and I have ZERO issue with it, if you watch the very end, you see Panerin throw a gloves off punch to the back of Wilson’s head when Wilson is in vulnerable position.
8. Again, I would’ve suspended him for a game and fined him (more than 5K) because he’s a reckless player. But they look at the actual ‘infractions’ first - them the name. Maybe wrong for sure but based on that...?
9. Wilson will most likely hurt someone very soon because he has zero respect.
