Just noting how bad our drafting has been. Many years of selecting the wrong players. I know nothings a guarantee, but most experts put perfetti well a head of Quinn. Was it because we didnβt have room in our depth for another centre? Did the 1.2 scouts we actually employed see something everyone else missed?
Iβm not counting out Quinn at all. Injuries most likely hindered his game and our organization is a cluster fork. I just believe Perfetti was the better pick and Iβm tired of saying that year after year - lulags
It's why drafting for need in the NHL is almost never a good idea. It's how you end up with a pick like Quinn or a pick like Kassian, among others.
I had to include Lysell for this bit of his write-up alone:
He plays with a pace unmatched in the draft class, attacking each play like itβs game seven. - kingcong39
if the sabres feel they're set at center for the next five years with jack, cozens, mitts and possibly skunk as their top-3, lysell is very appealing to me...am of the opinion that it's wide open in the top-5/6 and a trade down from 1/2 is a viable option this season dependent upon what the return is...and even the third-overall will get the sabres a nice forward

Don't draft for need. Draft whoever they think is the best player available when they pick.

i get that, and i happen to think that the best players with the highest upside are on the wing and i'm really liking what lysell brings...guarantee they'll be tempted to take beniers none-the-less

In My Opinion Only, this whole BPA only notion is such silliness, as is proven every year by our own draft wizards the Buffalo Bills.
They and most NFL teams draft for BPA only within a narrow list of positions based on Needs.
In this upcoming NHL draft where there is no consensus #1, and even the top 5 to top 10 is clearly less defined, sure..draft the BPA ...but from F's ...and continue it through rounds 2 and 3.

I don't disagree as the limited info I have read on Lysell makes him attractive. There isn't much video I have seen on him so my eyes could validate the write-ups though.
Guenther (sp?) Looked very good to my eyes and I like his write-ups as well. I think it is between Beniers and Guenther for 1st...but Lysell intrigues me as well.

agreed...point being, have no problem trading out of 1/2 if the return is sufficient (at least)...don't have a problem at no. 3 as they'll get themselves a nice forward there...hell, they could fall to 6 and still get one of those top forwards
here's a good vid...it's just one game but really shows how well he skates and attacks the game:

The bold is one of the main reasons why teams consistently miss on drafting good players, in all rounds. It's a common mistake.

That's a related discussion to me, regarding which positions have the greatest on ice impacts.
I agree with focusing on forwards but that's because I believe they have the biggest impact on a team's success on the ice.
sabres have first overall...they believe (not you, i or anyone else) owen power is bpa?
do you take him?
or,
do you look at the values you've given prospects...if, for instance, beniers is rated lower than power, but not by much, do you still stick with bpa? - Michael Pachla
If they believe he is the best player, then draft him.
The only reason I wouldn't take him in the top 3 spots is I believe all of Beniers, Guenther, and Eklund are better prospects, but I also fully understand my knowledge limitations compared to many others on draft prospects.

The fact that the Sabres are making the pick is why I want them to trade down.
They have like 4 scouts and the analytics department is probably so demoralized that they're playing doom on a graphing calculator in the basement

it seems to me that there are five or six prospects who are real close...of course, like you said, a scouting department has much more info than you or i...that said, if there's a slight difference in the value you place on each player, why not go for a position of need?
