We could have said this before the season started, or at the TDL. If making the playoffs was of any importance, the Hawks would keep guys like Janmark and Soderberg. They are key for playoff runs. Stan knows what this team is.

This year went exactly as planned. No fans, low expectations, don't have to worry about attendance. They are getting a experience for a ton of young guys, not to mention getting looks at amore guys than they probably expected.

I think some of the questions were answered, for the most part positive (play of the rookies).A relatively healthy roster will fix some more problems. I am sure Stan will try and address some more in the off season.

Baby steps.....I dont know how this team didnt exceed EVERYONE's expectations.

Kurashev, Suter, hagel, Kane, Debrincat, Dach, kubalik, Toews.....

Boqvist, Beaudin, Stillman, Mitchell, Kalynuk, Murphy

Lankinen played well for large stretches.

Do they have some holes? Sure....do they have some aging players who likely won't be contributors for next "window" to win? Sure....

overall, they have a lot more pluses than minuses.....I'll be the 1st to ride this team when "window" is open to win but again...this team isn't at 2007-08 level yet where next year I expect playoffs.

Next year, I want to see rookies get better, young D men start taking on more responsibility and Stan figure out the guys who are progressing and selling high on guys who are regressing.

Overall, I think this year was a success.....

1) More growth from the kids.
2) 1C.
3) Goalie.
4) More balanced lines - They have a LOT of middle/bottom 6 forwards, but the mix seems off to me. It's like they combos can't figure out how they want to play. You can't have one or two guys that commit to cycle and the other just kind of hangs out.

is 1 and 4 really problems?

Kubalik, Kane, DeBrincat, toews, and Dach are all top 6 players.

I am NOT giving up on Dach at 1C....people on this board wanted to shoot DeBrincat into the sun last year......Dach doesn't take a jump next year, convo about his ceiling is warranted.

Goalie.....I think Lankinen can be a Niemi type

I 100% disagree on line balance....they have some jam....Suter and Hagel are 2 great starts to a very dynamic 3rd line......

Biggest thing to me is getting young D men top minutes to see who will be the next round of top 4.....

You said so many, you named one, without even stating a reason why the whole coaching staff is a problem?

If the kids don't progress, and the lines keep playing disjointed (in my opinion), then yes they are problems.

As glowing as the report was on Toews, you (collective you, not you specifically) can't count him in as part of the team until he actually suits up.

I am not giving up on Dach at all. In fact I'm probably more bullish on him than 2/3 of this board. That said, he does have to show more in order to be considered a 1C. I'm fully aware he has yet to get any sort of training camp in, and he is coming off of a major injury... which is part of the reason why I am STILL bullish on him. But, if this current version is the top of his game, then he's a solid 2C.

If Lankinen is a Niemi type, then we have a problem. He played well behind a great defense. Lankinen has shown promise, but the league has adjusted to him. If he can figure it out, then great, solid goalie. I still like Subban too. I just can't say right now - with much confidence - that the Hawks have an answer in net.

Let me make one thing crystal clear. I am an idiot when it some to all of this. This is all just my best stab to logically parse what this current situation is, and how I believe they need to maneuver to get back to being a top team.

Keep contract lengths short, cut bait when you realize the player doesn't fit, and don't make any decisions based on emotion.

So yeah, I wouldn't say coaching was the problem there. (not directed at you).

Ooooooooooh, that guy. Yeah, he's struggled recently. Good thing Stillman has replaced him as the best D on the team.

You are welcome paulr.

Toews of course is Huge. Even if he can only play limited minutes he automatically becomes the best defensive forward and best face off man.

If you want to see some putrid defensive hockey, check out the highlights from the Sabres game. Dahlin looks about as useful as Z on some of those

Wasn’t he supposed to be the most sure fire number one overall pick defenseman of all time? The next Nick Lidstrom they said. Oh, well. Suck it Boofalo.

Why did Beaudin slot in ahead of Mitchell? Beaudin was playing ok, Mitchell not in Rockford.

Kubalik is not top 6, DeBrinkat is as a scorer only, Toews, who knows what he is? Dach is far from top 6 at the moment I do expect him to get there - in 2-3 years. that leaves Kane. Ask yourself, how many of those guys would bring a first round draft choice or a top 6 player back in trade?
