Why even sign him to retain salary, Best to just let him go UFA.
- LAHawk

With Stillman signed I would think the writing is on the wall for Z. I don't see what purpose he serves on the backend. He certainly doesn't curb opposing forwards from laying a heavy forecheck on our young puck movers.

Providing 25% of them want to work. You know, getting free money is hard to beat for some people.
- powerenforcer

You changed the subject. Your original point was it wasn’t economically viable to get the staff in for only a quarter of the seats in the arena. Now it’s about lazy welfare scammers. So what is the point you’re trying to make?

My sister and brother in law visited from the Chicago are and wanted to know why eating out is so expensive. I said well when you have to pay the dishwasher $15/hr. (minimum wage in Santa Monica) what do you think you have to charge to make eggs?

Question: since the servers are now making a "living wage", do I need to tip anymore?

- LAHawk

If you travel to Europe you’ll find the same thing. All restaurant staff make “a living wage”. Tipping in Europe isn’t necessary so you don’t have to. However when we go we still leave a tip if the service is very good.

Barry Trotz says the system employed isn't that important. I'll go with him.
- mohel

Barry Trotz being the gentleman coach he is, is trying to deflect the attention of he and his scheme, onto the success of the players. Good man! But the year before Trotz took over, Islanders very close to the bottom of the league in defensive numbers. With pretty much the same personal, he is near the top of the league defensively. In Nashville, his teams were always very competitive, because they did not give up too many goals. His problem in Nashville was the offense ..... which he had more than enough of in Washington.

Here is question for theo and the panel if the defensive players are not getting the system JC is trying to teach and employ on the ice shouldn't be up to JC and coaching staff to change the system that is better suited for the players they have now? Then in the offseason reevaluate the players that don't match the system what players do and what players are needed for that system. Because the defense has been a big problem and very inconsistent the last few years imo.
- Scott1977

My take is that the exact systems don't matter as much as execution of not only whatever systems are used but also fundamentals of hockey.

All systems will inevitably break down here and there during a game so the key is still executing fundamentals until structure is regained.

Then when systems are intact, successful execution happens when any player (veteran, rookie, everyone in between) applies fundamentals as those basics are transferable skills.

Or they should at least be transferable in theory across game situations, style of the opponent, etc.

Theo, I think your crystal ball needs some polishing.

Lankinen officially starting, says Colliton.

Beaudin in for Boqvist. Gaudette in for Kurashev.

- Chunk

I have the crystal ball in the shop now getting a tune up. We're both in California so getting a smog check, too.

It took Trotz a few years in Washington for the team (Ovechkin) to buy into his system.

Good point. That was actually my concern too. That is why I'd love to know the similarities between this man to many system and ones run successfully (besides talent).

If the young d-men can have success in this system and they win then its fine with me.

I'm just not sold on JC.

To be fair though, I also don't know how much time he spends on the defensive side of things or if he defers most of that work to Brookbank and Crawford.

- bhawks2241

On the bolded part, one other layer to consider is the fact that the Hogs play the same system so it's an organizational mandate so to speak.

And I'm insinuating that the Hawks will be able to eat some of Zs salary to trade him next season
- BetweenTheDots

Sure, but if they cannot sign him to a one-year contract, that gets messy. Ideally, they would just trade his rights this offseason and be done with it. I'm sure there are other implications that I'm missing here, but I can only care about one thing at a time.

Makes sense. Thanks for actually answering my question too.

Certainly. Although, to be fair, I just blacked out for a minute.

I still don't see how anyone can say definitively its the talent and not a combination of both but I guess we can only follow one narrative on the board.

I guarantee you if Colliton was let go tomorrow not a single NHL team would offer him a head coaching job.

- bhawks2241

Saying you can't say it's definitively the talent is like saying you can't say definitively the '20 Bears aren't as good as the '85 Bears.

I never said fire JC. I don't know what else to tell you man. I am not sold on him as a head coach.

I also don't think another NHL team would hire him as head coach IF the Hawks let him go.

Got it though. Don't have an opinion unless it fits what a few poster on here want or you will be attacked.

- bhawks2241

Got it, someone disagreeing with you = attacking you.

There's a report out that Aaron Rogders wants out of Green Bay. Will he be traded tonight during the NFL draft?

Hawks cannot qualify him and let him walk and become a ufa but then hawks do not get anything in return except one more roster spot opened. Shop him at the draft if not taken in the expansion draft and see what the hawks could get. Or sign and trade scerino is also possible. I m sure bowman and company already have a plan in place.

A few Euro free agent rumors, some of which isn't new to those who keep up with hockey news.

- Been reported a week ago by Scott Powers of the Athletic that there may be a package deal to not only sign Maxim Shalunov (C/W) but also sign Damir Zhafyarov (W) who is supposed to be a playmaker but limited upside, i.e. middle 6 ceiling but more realistically bottom 6. Not sure what a "package deal" means in this case.

- A few days ago the Hawks have been linked to KHL defenseman Nikita Lyamkin. Similar size as Zadorov with better puck moving skills and better defense. I read a report that Lyamkin's skating is not very good, though.

- Rumors seem to have resurfaced about the Hawks being one of many teams in on Swedish goalie Arvid Soderblom.

My initial take: yes on Soderblom but pass on the others.

All they do is qualify him, not really messy at all.

They had over 100 points every year he was there. Lost to the eventual Cup winner two of the other 4 years.

Pretty far fetched to think it took a while for him to make an impact.

The year they won their best players were healthy and all having career or close to career years.

What about paying the employees, the cost of opening up kitchens, stores, etc? to me it is not worth it, not for 25%.
- powerenforcer

The way i understand it, they are paying game day employees anyways
