Jets can’t win a gritty physical game.

It’s only going to get worse

Connor jumped in when Wheeler was hurt and Ehlers mixing it up with Thorton..... our 2 top goal scorers.

Btw - remember when Thompson was signed for his grit, toughness and experience. Have you seen him even lay a body check this year?

- jjonah

The Jets have a chance to win an Oilers playoff series if Mcjesus or Draisaitl go down with a serious injury. If Mcjesus and Draisaitl stay healthy, its a coin toss who comes out as winner. Second round against the Leafs,....... if the Jets do get by the oilers,............ I don't think the Jets have the D or grit to get by the Leafs.

I have to wonder if Scheifle is po'd because this was setting up as a year to do some damage and the D was not improved at all.

Hope I am wrong but I don't see the Jets getting out of the North.

Rant time, yay!!! Lol

Maurice has two weeks to wake up and realize his lines and systems do not work against Edmonton and Toronto!!! His job HAS to be on the line!!!
Wake up and take responsibility Paul!!

-Morrisey can not be on the power play
-wheeler is done!! He has now entered the Andrew Ladd phase of his career move him down the lineup and reduce minutes now
-Stastny is a very good center!! Get him back there
-forbot and Stanley are two slow for faster teams, both can not be in the line up, take out Forbot!!! Pionk has carried him all year!!!
-Pionk and Demelo are your ONLY 2 top 4 D, at least make sure they are both in the top 4, all other D are bottom pair or worse.
-we have basically clinched the playoffs. Get Heinola, Samberg, Vesalainen, Gustafson and perfetti in for at least 5 of these last 9 games. Not all 5 at once but get each of them 5! Rest players now and see what we have in them!!!! They are better than 5 current guys in your line up easy!!!
-since you prefer to only play one PP unit, make a new top unit. 27-55-81-4 and either 13 or 25

And when you don’t do any of these things and we get knocked out in round one, please have enough pride to not make any more excuses and just realize a change is long over do.

Last thing, well Done coach for sitting 55, it was long over due for his complete lapse and disregard for back checking at times but still I will give credit when it’s due and that was a good move.

Agree on all points.

Implement those suggestions,........ just need enough season points to avoid Leafs in first round to figure it out, otherwise its curtains.

The Jets still scare me as the Canadian team that could beat the Leafs in a 7 game series. Particularly if Hellybuck (sp?) gets hot.
One thing fr sure though, used to be you could intimidate the Leafs physically and get them off their game, not any more. Happy to go there if Maurice wants to.

Agreed. Jets are a pushover. Any physicality to a game will only hurt them

Speaking of which, beauty hit by Sandin on Wheeler!

Helly actually played well. Score should have been more lopsided. I hope WPG makes it past EDM in the first round, but I’m not so sure

Tampa got swept then added a bunch of toughness and grinders to win the cup, Washington definitely had a physical element to their cup wining team and so did the Blues, the playoffs are a different style of game without question, never going to win a cup on straight talent/skill.
- JetFuel

Tampa Bay added 3 top 6 forwards, and pulled a hard-reset on Shattenkirk after playing in the Rangers system.

Toughness wasn’t the reason at all.

I think you see a different Thompson in the playoffs. Certainly the Jets need some toughness - can't rely on Ehlers and Connor. PLD showed up to play - great sign!

When you get a very debatable "embellishment" call, and a roughing to Connors for basically saying "what are you doing", you know you have a problem.

I can understand why a ref gets suspended in his final few games.

Having said that, the Jets can - and will - play harder - they didn't deserve to win! I'm tired of Scheif "lolly-gagging" it to the bench - maybe a good lesson to be benched!

- grahamzky

I think you see a slower Thompson in the playoffs. He’s old, and hasn’t been NHL caliber since the last lockout, if ever

Maurice hasn't changed his systems ever, he isn't changing them now.

Even with system changes this team just isn't built to win, too soft and small to win in the playoffs and one of the worst D cores in the league.

I'll be very surprised if they make it past round one.

I think a Winnipeg/Edmonton series would be the most interesting first round in the league. You have better forward depth and goaltending, they have a better defense.
Then there is the McDavid factor.
I have no idea who would win that series but it probably goes 7

Tampa added Coleman, Goodrow, Maroon, Bogosian, Schenn

Yes Tampa had skill but they also played physical, grinded and beat their opponents down, they also had a large and mobile defense.

You can think what you want Rexy, I really don't care but the reality is the physical/grindy type players Tampa added helped in capturing that cup.

Bogosian and Schenn were as perfect an example of passengers as you can get.
The other 3 were legit, top 6 caliber, analytics darling forwards.

Ah yes, so they contributed nothing then.

Not one of those guys are top 6 talents, all 3rd line forwards, Goodrow is a 4th liner who did okay with Gourde and Coleman who are legitimately good 3rd line players.

Also all those forwards who you called analytics darlings were grinding, hitting and playing on the edge but totally disregard that fact if you want.

Some fans don’t get it....a Sam Bennett can be as valuable or even more than an Ehlers in a playoff run

Playoffs a different animal

I think Tampa also had the guts to trade a first rounder for him.

Something that would be considered blasphemous here in Winnipeg as we always have to think about the future!

I think during the 2019 playoff run, Ehlers averaged less than 9 minutes/game. It’s challenging to figure out whether Ehlers could have had an impact as he was hardly played.

Yes it played a part, no wanting to admit that or ignoring it, won’t change that.
It’s ok to admit that they added physical
Players who could play well. Maroon is not a top 6 forward. Bogo is not a top pairing D yet played top pair.

The pieces are there on the Jets and on the moose. But the coach is not.

They are still one of the biggest teams in the league but they don’t play big. That’s for sure.

Kind of like how you disregard the fact TB has a Vezina goaltender, a Norris Dman. and a Hart winner, yet you stand by the idea it was the grinders that won TB the cup.

Ultimate, Chevy has trade two first rounders at past deadlines. He is clearly willing to do so.
Maurice is the problem. Chevy could have gone out and got whoever you want and it wouldn’t have helped as Wheeler would still get 20+ min a night and he’d match up 55 against the other teams best no matter how badly he was getting beat.

I am obviously not a Maurice fan. But the Leafs do not scare me. They just lost 5 in a row and were not all that impressive against a Jets team that couldn’t have been worse.
I hope Montreal wakes up, cause perry and company will be fun to watch against the Leafs.

I don’t think anyone was saying grinders won it for them, but they had all the pieces you mentioned previously, and didn’t get there. it was rounding out the teams dynamic that helped.

For example, what are Lewis and Thompson bringing to the Jets? Penalty killers? Is that all, a couple guys who can play fourth line and not got scored on. Is that it? Pretty sure we can find those guys anywhere who may also bring something else?? Maybe a goal now and then or a hit once in while? Has Thompson or Lewis finished a check this year?
