I prefer to look into stories, not just make assumptions based off looking at hockeyDB.

Your attitude is piss poor if you don't believe a guy like that can be something more.

- Santo_44

History sides with me in these situations.

However, I never said I wasn't cheering for him while he was doing well or that I don't want him to become more. Even with that said, everything points to a back up playing amazing recently. It's upto him to change history.

The inverse is true for a goalie coming to a new team that f around in the offensive zone and fails to pick up open players in transition the other way. The leafs have played like poop in front of Dave he just returned the favour.

Vancouver is awful and the top players on the leafs did the bare minimum to out play them. This team has a problem with commitment to doing what it takes to win consistently. Coaching should take a lot more heat for the performance night in and out. Throttle your vastly inferior opponent out of the gate and when you get. 2 -3 goal lead then keefe can tinker with his toys. It’s called game management, playing with a comfortable lead is less taxing then a tight game let alone gutting out a come back.

I wonder what it would look like in here if it was like the pens game. Gave up 6 in the third to the Devils.

He was much better positioned to be a starter.
- Aaron_85

Agreed but going out and getting him to be the starter was a foolish, knee jerk reaction. They had Reimer, they just needed a good back up 1B guy but instead they went and got Bernier and anointed him the starter and then kept playing him even when he struggled because they refused to admit they made a mistake anointing him as the starter.

It was frustrating to watch.

Bernier was so bad they sent him to the minors at one point when they finally realized they could no longer deny the mistake. Those first shot on net goals he was routinely giving up were so WTF.

I don't know if he had any trade protection but I seriously don't think he would have wanted to come back here at the deadline.

Yeah all true stuff.

I think Dubas does a pretty good job of fixing and admitting his mistakes. I don't think he openly admits them sometimes but he does make active decisions to correct him.

Also, he's always stuck with his plan. He always said skill is number one and they will trade for the rest/sign free agents. He seems to be pretty right about it.

May be time to circle back and not sign Erikkson, Beagle, Rousell, Myers, and Pearson to bad contracts that will impact your team for years, but hey its the Canucks

#Leafs goaltending stats during 5-game winless skid

GAA: 3.69
Save %: .858
SOG Against/Game 25.4

feels like the team has been doing a decent enough job in front of the goalies...25 shots is good. only 1 team (avs) is averaging 25 against per game

and no, they have not all been high danger shots...iv watched the game...pretty average shots..

Specifically looking at stats? I mean maybe? I struggle to find too many 28 year olds in NHL history with a career .917 save percentage and 75 career games. I can think of Tim Thomas and Khudobin. But either way Its quite unusual...Therefor instead of looking at just numbers I choose to dig into the story behind the numbers. I see a human being who has struggled and been through a lot since becoming drafted. I see a goalie who has no doubt always had a special talent from a young age to today.

I see a goalie who needs a chance to prove himself to be more than a "backup" because his story and statistics suggest he can be.

I see a lot of unknown potential in Campbell...which is different than a regular backup who's managed to just get by in the NHL providing average results.

probably why he didnt sit

Actually no, campbells stats the past 5 games have been worse than anything we've seen from freddy in a 5 game stretch, including his last 5 games.
Campbell avg past 5 games: .807
Andersens avg past 5 games: .853

Both horrible but your hate and facts dont line up.
Fortunately campbell had that stretch where he played the best of his entire career to help average out his season #'s.

But if freddy comes back and plays like he had while he was injured, yes we're in trouble

I dont care who the goalie is, i just want success and possibly cap space lol

- Fakepartofme

It's bordering on bizarre how many times I have to say this, I don't hate Fred... I want him to be better. I don't think that's an unrealistic expectation, I feel the same about Campbell right now.

We're really able to cherry pick 5 games to prove our point there? Because I was talking season #'s on the whole....

Good to know and I like the thought of making Freddy battle and earn his starts.

I won't lie in the past you have drawn the ire of the secret society of Freddy Wives with your comments and you have made the list.

That being said the list is in erasable marker so we have lightly erased your name from said list but the imprint is still there so we can just quickly retrace it if deemed necessary.

- Cush29

🤣

If Fred comes back and plays like poop I will hate his play then too, but it will be about him in the moment. Not him as a goalie over the last 5 years.

Despite understanding where you're going with this, I'm not convinced there was a goaltender actually available to the Leafs that would have been considered an upgrade on Andersen.

With a similar cap hit of course.

- Scabeh

Agree exactly. What team is going to sell one of their two top goalies? Cap hit or not.

We're not the only team here trying to win a cup.
And even the bottom tier teams need a top goalie to compliment their up coming draft picks.
It's a position where you have to draft that guy.

And obviously we don't have any number ones yet.

- Lehner has been available. (as a UFA - people laughed when I said Leafs should sign him as a backup before he joined the Islanders)
- Grubauer was available
- Holtby was available (on the cheap)
- Khudobin (similar level to Freddy, but seems the alcohol takes his playoff nerves away)
- Varlamov
- even Cam Talbot

- MaximusAurelius

And I'm sure you can guarantee us that any of those are can't misses.
At least until the first losing streak starts, then you'll play the "told you so card".

envy of what? all the success this team has had over the last half century?

Please, list everything this team has accomplished since there have been more than six teams in the league................

The only thing I find, I could be wrong. But it seems the other team wires 100 mph slapper and then bang in the easy rebound ( Leafs D are pretty passive in front of our net ) and the Leafs try to pass/skate the puck into the net lately.

So long story short, we need to start wiring the puck at the net instead of skating around and around and around trying to fancy it in.

And some better tending....some were mad when the tips and screens were going in and now we’re just seeing straight shots going in. Grass isn’t always greener.
