very much agree that in principle it makes sense for governments to temporarily set up a program that reduces the risk of infection.
however, since most covid cases are asymptomatic (and biggest part of spread actually comes from asymptomatic transmission) it is probably not a very effective measure (if the goal is to reduce transmission).
in any case - people that are really ill from covid are not going into work - even if it means they are losing money that they cannot afford to lose.

Obviously you can’t do anything about people you can’t anything about (asymptotic) but if you can do something about people you can do something about (people with sore throat, fever, etc) you should do something.

Now, that’s a sentence!

yes, and i had edited my post before your reply (we do not know the contribution of asymptomatic transmissions as a percentage).
btw -- fever is not a common symptom / indicator of active disease / recent infection.

last point: and this is an assumption based on what i have seen/heard so far from discussions from scientists in the infectious disease field and working on covid -- it is very likely that the risk of getting active disease is at least partially linked to viral loads and re-infections. in other words - if you have a transmission from one person to another, with relative low viral load, people's immune system in general cope well.
however.. if there are several exposures in short time (indoors, with several people transmitting and / or a 'supertransmittor' who sheds high viral loads) then it might be more likely for the infection to develop into mild/severe disease.

EDIT: so I guess I am advocating for more open-air stores and takeaway point of grocery shopping (cannot believe that a year later there isn't a proper system implemented for people to pick up their groceries outdoors on demand)

Depends what they spend the money on. Unfortunately, paying down the debt is becoming a bigger share of total spending
- Canada Cup

I guess the current health crisis (and the tb-malaria-hiv-enteric diseases and other infectious diseases crises for last 20y around the world) proves that they are not spending it well.

Same for 'climate change investments' - yes, it will help get politicians get reelected. but no, it is not the best way to allocate scarce resources (better ROIs on education, women and girl education and sexual and reproductive health rights, infectious diseases and a lot of other SDGs).

What’s wrong with people having different points of view? Can’t we talk about policy ideas without getting upset?

I’m talking about a temporary initiative of paid sick days to get us through a temporary worsening of the pandemic so that it lasts for less time than it would if people who are sick go back to work because they can’t afford to stay home.

I’m not proposing a long term thing at all. I know who the Premier is and that this sort of thing isn’t an option. And I’m talking about his medical advisors - not random doctors.

- Canada Cup

I'm not upset and yes of course we can have those discussion but when you open your reply with a "It can't get worse?" when I never said anything of the sorts it comes across as you looking to argue. If that wasn't your intention then fine but it sure reads like that.

I'm glad you are aware of who the premier is but did I say you were not aware of this?

Honestly your reply didn't make much sense to me and I interpreted it as confrontational and argumentative hence my inquiry as to why you wanted to argue. If that's not the case apologies.

I think a federal temporary solution is needed vs provincial. I assume you think a provincial one should be put in place vs federal.

I think the feds haven't done enough as a whole in relation to this pandemic and are leaving provinces with far too much to tackle to avoid being blamed for the failures. My opinion and I am fairly sure you feel differently and that's ok.

The one thing I would hope we can both agree on is neither level of government has done anywhere near enough, quickly enough on any of this.

The fact flights have and continue to come into Pearson daily in the volume and from the destinations they have, with terrible protocols at Pearson is just so WTF - I mean how much of the spread of this and the variants have been traced back to these flights?
I personally have no idea but I'd sure like to know - is that even tracked or is that something we don't track because we just don't want to let the public know?

Weak leadership at the federal level on this issue from the onset. Good (not great) leadership at the provincial level in Ontario initially but it's eroded and fallen to 'm'eh' levels for me since. And I only say 'M'eh' vs weak because I think the provincial government(s) have been asked to do much more on this then they every should have and continue to be asked to do so (i.e. paid sick time).

I do wonder if the NDP were in power in Ontario would they have already implemented 10 paid sick days per year? How about the Lie-berals?

I'll be interested to see how it plays out - sounds like something provincial is coming?

No, it’s brilliant

I accept Max’s point that some people are asymptomatic and will show up to work not knowing they’re infectious regardless of a paid sick leave program (you can’t do anything about people you can’t do anything about).

However, you still want to prevent sick people from showing up to work and infecting others (but if you can do something about people you can do something about you should do something).

I mean let a little poetry into your life
