A little unrelated, but with all you guys talking about having spouses who are teachers:

My parents were both in education, so their vacations always matched.

I have no idea how marriages with only one teacher stay together - especially ones where the guy is the teacher (like my brother).

I would be sooooooo franking pissed if I was getting up every morning in the summer to go to the rock quarry, while my wife slept in 'til noon.

It sucks but sometimes it’s nice when she takes the kids for a week or 2 to the cottage and I’m home alone. 😎🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Oh yeah... how is that massive switch to open office concept working out for people now.

People fcking hated it at the time, and now it looks like a ridiculous decision.

They followed rules but my neighbour said he thinks he picked up something a stapler from the desk of the guy who was sick and must has rubbed his eyes.

Open office concept blows - big time.

I had an office as a manager for 15 years or more then took a new job as a manager where the only office on the entire floor is the director's office. I hated it and hate it still but hate it much less since I'm at home for over a year now.

The noise volume, chatter, smells from food etc. in an open office concept drives me insane. People 'popping by' your desk non-stop with no ability to have a closed door to indicate leave me the (frank) alone I'm doing something important.

I may go full Less Nesmen (Winner of the Buckeye News Hawk Award) if I ever go back to the office and tape off my door and demand people knock or I will ignore them.

First world problems, but I have to strategically plan out using all my vacation time.

I can only bank so much, and I'm at that limit, so if I don't use them all, they are gone.

A couple of years ago I lost two days, and I was pissed for about a week.

I think it would have to be really bad and consistently bad, and even then it would be tough to actually do anything about it. I have seen people game the STD and LTD system.

right, and thats what I mean..if I am taking 3-8 a year...nobody notices.
if someone has 12 or more (think its something like that) or so many in a certain timeframe...it gets flagged.

its really rare I am so sick I cant work..i work at a PC

But years I had zero sick days...nobody cared either..so whats the point. use a few a year to take a needed break

This chart stresses me out, I need a drag.

Also funny enough stress is probably way ahead of all these for blood clots.

I've been fortunate enough to have paid sick days for a long, long time through different employers.

Back when I worked in a casino (and you could smoke inside them) is when I had the most sick time ever. I got bronchitis once and pneumonia once and seemed to get terrible chest colds twice a year but I never took more than the allotted days that were paid at 100% which I think was 6? I should have taken more time off a few times for sure but never did.

Since then I would say I probably average 2 to 3 days a year but I (did) work in an office and don't face the public which I think is a huge factor.

The ability to stay home but work from home when your not feeling great also has a huge impact to this and I have been able to do that for a number of years now. Bosses seem to be happy to hear your not coming in to spread something around but can be productive.

IF the province goes to paid sick days for all the industries most impacted will be obviously those who are customer / public facing and that's fine for McDonalds or Tim Hortons or the Galen conglomerate of grocery stores etc. they can afford to take the hit.

I do wonder / worry how it will impact a smaller business like a private restaurant or bar, small shop etc. Can those businesses afford to absorb the costs or does it mean they choose between going under / not hiring as many staff? There are potential negative consequences beyond just less available 'service industry' jobs in that I would imagine less staff with the same workload in a busy bar, restaurant or shop will lead to higher turnover because staff will be overworked etc. etc. etc.

It's an interesting situation / dilemma and I am interested to see how it plays out. Maybe the government decides to pay for all the sick time themselves but I just don't see that happening. Perhaps some sort of a subsidy to smaller businesses to offset sick time costs where big businesses are on the hook to pay it themselves?

- Cush29

when you say 'pay for all the sick time themselves' you actually mean politicians & government officials taking the decision to spend taxpayers money.. (just so we're clear that gov't actually doesn't have its 'own' money)

So question for you fellas and ladies who already have paid sick days:

What's the most you've ever taken?

I don't think I've ever taken more than two in a year.

And on the one hand, I don't think I'll be as macho-dude anymore and go in even when I'm feeling like poop, but I also think there will be more days where I say I'm feeling under the weather but can still work, so I'll just work from home.

- Atomic Wedgie

I always had paid sick days. In the last 20 years before I retired, I took 2 sick days.
One was after jaw surgery and one they forced me to take because I had a 100.1* temp during sars.

Went to work sick all the time... Different times theses days though.

My kid who has never worked in the office where he was hired was told by his boss that she doubts that they will ever be all “allowed” to go in every day. These are lawyers in court a lot, so prepare at home, be in court, be in the office - some kind of cycle.

I went to work after having 3 wisdom teeth removed. Specifically got the 8 am appointment so I would just be a few minutes late.

I'm now thinking how stupid that was.

If this keeps getting worse the choice becomes paying sick workers to stay at home or closing more businesses. Guess which one is going to cost more.
- Canada Cup

CERB payments and EI payments when the people out of work can't find jobs will obviously cost more if the pandemic gets worse but we have no reason to believe it will get worse. There is a vaccine, it is being administered, there are protocols (rules) in place to help minimize spread.

We may not like some, all of these things but it's not going to endlessly get worse there are too many things being done now that were not being done a year ago.

It may get worse short term because people were being silly, stupid or just revolting but long term it will get better.

So the choice for paid sick days should be viewed with long term impacts as well as short term ones. It's being used (again) as a political issue to try and garner support for some and point the finger at others (sadly). These things aren't free despite what some political parties seem to think so it would be foolish to look at it as an easy to do, with no long term consequences thing.

Can they do something temporary? Probably but the provinces won't do that, it would be a federal thing.

Provinces know if they do it they can never step back and revoke it.

It wasn't too long ago there were no sick days (unpaid or paid) mandated by legislation and the Emergency leave provisions were added to provincial legislation in Ontario. I remember that was widely celebrated as win.

Does everyone want paid sick days? Of course.

Can every business afford to provide them today? I'm not sure.

Will it impact businesses from growing and expanding in the future? Maybe?

Would it perhaps stop someone from opening a business? I hope not but maybe?

Like I said it's an interesting issue with many unknowns, I just think rushing in to do it based on the pandemic may not be work out in the long run if it's done as a permanent provincial change.

As a temporary federal measure to assist in the pandemic response - yell yes do it yesterday (but it won't happen - JT has said as much).

It would be interesting to take this poll with women.

I'm guessing that the numbers would be higher.

Not because they get sick more or abuse the system - but because they aren't into the macho bullpoop like we are.

I purposely scheduled my wisdom tooth surgery on the Monday after GTA V came out, took the rest of the week off, posted up on the couch, ate dilaudid and played video games until the next Monday when I went back to work.

The Liberals under Kathleen Wynne legislated two sick days per year.

It was one of the first things the Ford government revoked.
