One note on Bjork and the expansion draft. I think it would take a lot not to protect him. He's cheap, middle 6 and proving his worth. KA specifically identified his as a player he really wanted because he plays the way that Adams wants all his players to play. I think I could safely assume he'll be one of the building blocks. I think Adams uses a mid round pick to steer Vegas to Asplund instead of Borgen (or McCabe maybe if he signs)

Bjork is "his guy" now, and he signed Tage to a 3 year deal. Signs are seemingly pointing as Asplund.

Would Seattle take Girgensons and the 5th round pick from the Staal trade to leave all our kids alone?

Or you sit Asplund and send him to Rochester and he's not Eligible for the expansion draft.

If Karmanos is that into analytics, leaving Risto exposed is a no-brainer.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the "games remaining" thing on Capfriendly, but to the best of my knowledge he's eligible regardless

https://mobile.twitter.co.../1382335965256105992?s=19

Basically the "GR" requirement is just counting to make sure the Sabres have enough eligible players but he's eligible no matter what. So while he wouldn't meet the criteria to count toward the Sabres total, he's still available

It's confusing.

Hank wins.

Good writer, good coach...do I say hope is building back up for this organization?

I’m still reserved, still waiting for meaningful in March.

Team still lacks muscle but passion and grit are starting to show up. Need to build a strong 4th line focused on muscle:

Skinner Eichel Skunk
Bjork Cozens Routs
Asplund Mittlestadt Tall

I think the Sabres will have a great D core, they really should move on from Risto:

Dahlin Joker
Bryson Borgen
McCabe Samuelson

Goalies, total toss up:

Ullmark maybe, this is priority over 4th line but on the same level of importance as moving Risto.

With Buffalo being considered the grave yard for players, this 4th line is going to have to be either over paid free agents (bad idea) or scout and sign role players to league minimums and bring that hunger into the locker room and let that energy grow.

Sabres need to build from within and continue this direction with Granato, if we see big names in play then we know the Pegulas are still pulling the strings.

Yeah, essentially there's a difference between exempt and counting toward the total. If Asplund doesn't hit the games total he just doesn't count toward their mandatory number for exposure, but he's still available

granato likes asplund, or so i've gathered...seems he likes the way asplund is first in on the forecheck and he credits him with driving the forecheck on that line...seems to me they'd like more of that not less

Guess it depends on if Granato gets the gig, lots of decisions to be made.

Here's the total pool of forwards to potentially protect, assuming (safely, I believe) that they go the 7-3-1 method:

Eichel, Skinner, Reinhart, Olofsson, Girgensons, Mittelstadt, Asplund, Bjork, Thompson

That's 9 total.

Are Girgensons and Thompson the 2 that get left out?

Do they convince Skinner to waive his NMC for the expansion draft while comfortably assuring him that Seattle is not going to take him?

If they can get Skinner to waive, that means they only need to leave one of the 8 above unprotected.

Is Girgensons the easy or most likely choice to be the one left unprotected?

They've gone from barely having 5 forwards worth worrying about to having 9. It's a good problem to have.

yup...but i could see any coach wanting an inexpensive bottom-six forward who can play center or wing and who has the drive to do the dirty while being first in on the forecheck...it makes too much sense
