Moral of today's story: Ranger fans want instant success. That just doesn't happen in the NHL or in a rebuild. It takes time.
There's only a handful of weeks left in the regular season. Can't we just come together and root for the team? Keep the offseason topics for a rainy summer day... |

Im not talking about instant success, and I think we can all agree we really havent had much of a rebuild here. Luck has favored us mightily the last 2 years. Based on the players we have, Im only looking to make an adjustment that would give us better balance. |

I don’t see how you can say we haven’t had much of a rebuild here.
Yes we won the lottery that last 2 years, but since “The Letter” went out there are only 5 guys still on the team that were there that day, and that includes Chytil who only had a 9 game call up.
We also have a new Team President and new coaching staffs on the parent club and in Hartford.
Edit: I missed Georgie, who played 10 games |

Would be 2 yrs on Getzlaf, the 3rd year would be on the kids to step in.
As far as Im concerned Chytil is NOT A CENTER. Hes a winger that is playing center. Hes the worst faceoff guy in the league that plays center full time. Hes easily pushed off the puck. Doesnt handle pressure on the ice very well. He doesnt play with his head up to see the ice and the players around him. He will always look to shoot first for better or worse.
There are plenty of other 20/21 year olds far more suited to be playing that position than Chytil. - aecliptic
Truthfully I dont want another over the hill player. Weve went down that route before, this is the first real rebuild we ever had, that is actually working. The Rangers need to let these kids grow into whatever for 2 or 3 years. Look at their growth!! Next year the playoffs will be within grasp. Patience. |

You're looking to better balance one of the hottest teams in the league. Just seems like tinkering for tinkering's sake. Why fix something that's not broken?
Specifically regarding Chytil, if he has all the talent in the world, why would we trade him? Why wouldn't we keep working with him to be a better C. It's not like he's needed on the top two lines right now or even next year.
That said, I'd trade him in the right deal. |

Traditionally rebuilds take years. Tearing it all down, accumulating assets and starting over. This never felt like a rebuild, atleast not like the one Detroit and teams similar to that are going through. We had a couple years where we lulled and werent particularly good but werent totally pathetic. Then boom, Panarin, Trouba, Fox... 2nd overall pick... 1st overall pick...

Because I dont believe you can teach someone who isnt naturally a center to be a center. Theres a certain mindset to that position and when I see Chytil play he has a very linear style to his game, like hes got tunnel vision going down the ice. With the guys hes surrounded with - LAF, Kakko and Krav - he needs to play a wide game, he needs to be inclusive of the people around him. That vision, awareness, anticipation is something I dont believe you can just teach someone. Thats why centers are so highly coveted, why theyre so important and why its arguably the most difficult position on the ice. |

One Cup in 80 years and 26 years since the last one is hardly wanting instant success. |

Understandable.
With a team this young I always liked the idea of a grizzled vet who’s got some gas left, looking for one more chip (or a chip). Cause those guys help big time to keep the kids going in the playoffs when crap can get very frustrating. |

It is such a push-pull. A lot of intellectually know that we should be patient, but emotionally....we want to (frank)ing win!!
I know I get itchy because I see how good they can be. |

Great way of putting it. I, too, want to see the team improve. I think as a fan of a sports organization that’s an obvious statement.
I have faith in the direction the rebuild has gone. The recent play supports that, as does the end of the regular season last year.
Jumping the gun and swapping Chytil for Getzlaf is a perfect example of being impatient. They need to make smart decisions. Not emotional ones.
And give me a break with the history lesson. How does that change the future success of the team? (Not directed at you, Ceph) |

I think this is where I'm sort of the third option. I just feel like now is the time to go all in. I would agree it's not for Getzlaf, but I really do think that we have to try to win. now. Whether we like it or not, guys are going to get paid. Our first order of business need to be locking up Fox and Shesty to long term deals as soon as we are allowed too. Mika is getting a big raise. If Kakko continues his upswing, he's getting a healthy raise. With cap concerns coming, it's not out of the question to think without majoring tinkering, we could quickly wind up in a Toronto like situation just due to the big contracts we would surely have to hand out.
The best thing right now about the Gorton rebuild, is that we have so many pieces in the pipeline that trading one or two to make a major splash is not going to destroy our pipeline. We want to be like Tampa where it seems like they always have the next superstar waiting in the wings, well that's a team that took major swings including a couple big trades with us.

So, that would make me the 4th option? Man, I feel like Chiefs before LImDa left!
I'd call Panarin and Trouba our big splashes. IMO, our roster as it sits today is about 92% optimal. We have the pieces in the organization to bring that percentage a little higher even. Regardless of what happens in the next 3 weeks, with another season under their belts this team is going to be too much for many teams to handle.
Why do we need to do anything that would be called a "big" move? |

I think having ideas and proposing them, such as the one Aecliptic had is the point of this board. He has a good argument that when the Rangers are ready to make a push for real, veterans are needed in the lineup. It's just about timing on WHEN to get those veterans. |
