In addition, the PP should like this:
Thornton -- Tavares -- Marner
Matthews -- Rielly
Kerfoot -- Hyman/Simmonds -- Spezza
Dermott -- Nylander
Leafs should use Tavares & Hyman (or Simmonds) more to screen the goalie, and let Nylander and Matthews shoot it - using the 'wingers' to set up the shot / pass to the man in front of goal.
It isn't that complicated - just use the formula that has worked for years for other teams.

if not on the PP, what's Thornton's added value to this team?
He still has exceptional passing skills.
Same for Spezza's role on the PP. And Kerfoot who was good on the PP in Colorado. |

Foligno, Willie, Matthews and Robertson will be added to the line up from last night.
When you let in 3 of the first 6 shots, you will not many of those games. |

If you didn’t watch the game natural stat trick says we were good.

Leafs took more shots/attempts but Jets led in HD 7-4
winnable game...if Campbell is a bit better...and the PP does something besides nothing |

It's been bad going back to last season. I'm not sure he was the right guy for the job. Wasn't he a faceoff/defensive guy anyways? |

I didn’t see the game, but Sportsnet kinda says it wasn’t Campbell’s fault.

Thorton should be part of a depth, sheltered scoring line with a shooter. I thought that naturally would've been Spezza with Kerfoot centering, getting all the soft matchups.
I don't think that's working as much, because we're so top heavy on minutes with Keefe; when we had a full roster, even our second line was playing far less than Matthews/Marner. |

He would say that, but Campbell let in a real softie; he wasn't sharp.
Rittich looked better, but we were a hot poop sundae overall. |

Ya he looked terrible last night. Not many stand outs last night.
Robertson was decent and somewhat noticeable. |

I’d add Simmonds to that, even put him ahead if Joe given his inability to make entries into offensive zone and constant lost puck battles. I’m thinking
Hyman AM MM
Gally JT Willie
Foligno Kerfoot Mik
Nash Spezza Engvall or Robertson (who looked much better last night) |

I still think he can play in a limited sheltered role with the right combination of linemates, but the game is not slowing down and he's never been fleet of foot.
The real concern is that, somehow, we went from an offensive juggernaut to a basically one line team.
Nylander will help, but it doesn't change the fact that line combos with Matthews this year are playing twice as many as Tavares, with 461 minutes vs. 233 minutes respectively.
That's why I want to break up the bromance and put Nylander back with Matthews and Marner with JT, and figure out a way to roll 4 lines with this team.
And then on the PP, just load it up with our best players, let them stay out there until they score or don't. |

The JT line was pretty strong before Willie was sent to his room. Keep those two pairs together. The only possible reason to make mi es would be if you want Hyman on the third and want to move Foligno up maybe to the second. I would still keep Hyman on the top line. I think he has more offensively than Foligno |

That broken hand really hurt simmonds. Last night would’ve been a good night for him to light a spark but nothing. Probably doesn’t want to drop the gloves and everyone knows it, so he’s lost his effectiveness.

Adam, listen. We always sucked. Sometimes playing in the weakest division in hockey were able to disguise said suckage, but we always sucked. |
