I’m all in favour of improving conditions in meat packing plants but if they’re not considered ready they shouldn’t play. When they are, they can play. Any worker in any situation is entitled to have their safety taken seriously. - Canada Cup
If they are not considered ready by whom? Themselves? Dr. JT Miller?
I don't disagree with the sentiment that any worker in any situation is entitled to have their safety taken seriously - that's why there is legislation that allows workers to refuse work without penalty from their employer when it is indeed unsafe.
I'm talking about a pro athlete saying they aren't in 'game shape' vs it being safe here, he may not feel he is in game shape but why should the rest of the teams in the division have to deal with an even more compressed scheduled and risk inury as a result of not getting enough time between games to accommodate Vancouver?
Vancouver, who got COVID, regardless of if it was due to someone from their organization not following protocols or not (Blame) and is very likely to miss the playoffs anyhow.
Imagine if the league gives Vancouver extra time, & as a result further compresses the schedule to accommodate Vancouver and a star player gets hurt or a starting goalie for a playoff team pulls a groin due to a lack of rest?
If others teams have to suffer to give Vancouver this extra time they are asking for (and there is no obvious or emergent safety risk to Vancouver) when they are medically cleared to play I think they should be forced to do so (play that is).
Or again - pack in the season and give wins to all the teams who had games remaining against them.
Just my opinion. |

I mean sports science says too much time off will result in injury...it is 100% true that they are in a position that is not as safe to play as it were 2 weeks ago. With that being said yeah they should either play or choose to forfeit games against Ottawa so they can add to their schedule.
Its an unfortunate situation but the league isnt really in a position where they can accommodate. If they dont feel safe to play allow them to forfeit against Ottawa. |

That's a good thing, I just hope if they are medically cleared to play the league says "game on".
I mean players playing at less than 100% of game shape is something I think we all agree has been happening to a lot of players this year and will continue.
Off the top of my head on the Leafs we have Matthews, Simmonds, Andersen and Campbell, JT (we suspect) to name just a few.

It is very unfortunate indeed. I have an issue with forfeiting some games and not others however but I don't see any magic solution here where someone doesn't get screwed over in some way ranging from exceptionally slight to big time.
One could argue even playing the games give the teams the Canucks have games against right away an advantage to teams they play in a week when presumably they will have found their legs and game again and will be harder to beat.
Even the option to 'forfeit all their remaining games' scenario presents a small "Well but" as is removes the opportunity for a team to not have picked up points that they will be simply given but what can you do.
These 2 options are the ones I see as the best of what's available but it's all meaningless if the medical report / examinations say they can't play due to it being unsafe. |

Why is it that you think they don’t want to play? Lazy? They know they’re going to lose? Not 100%? Players go through this every year. If a bunch of them have not fully recovered from a serious illness and are worried about playing in that condition, we should take them seriously. If not, they could just let McDavid score 30 tomorrow and win the Richard trophy

All of the speculation going into the season was that if one team can't play all their games, the league would figure out a way to try to make it equitable to all teams. They aren't going to just give teams free points.

And if a team doesn't agree with those terms like JT Miller is implying they have the right to forfeit games. |
