Mini rant:

Salary caps are the ultimate double edged sword in pro sports. They've essentially saved a lot of small market teams in some sports, they've led to increased parity, increased player income especially at the lower and middle levels and provided a model where both ownership and players are guaranteed a fair slice of the pie. They've also ruined the way we look at players. We don't see a human being we root for playing for a team we love, we see a contract length and value under an overlay of stats backing up whether they do or don't "earn" their pay for the team we love. I want to be able to cheer for a player and stop concerning myself with his contribution on an economic scale. I want to be able to like Carey Price without somebody asking me if I $10.5m a year for five years like him.

So, long and short, we need salary caps but they've taken a lot of the fun out of sports from a fan perspective.

While I agree. How (frank)ing garbage would it be to be in the European Soccer markets where teams can spend 50000000000000 dollars and punk on teams that can spend 20 cents and are at the bottom of the table?

Yup, spot on. Like I said...we need them but they still suck. Baseball is a mess for this reason too. I just hate seeing a player as their contract rather than as a player.

They shouldn't need more than 3 or 4 million more than their current cap hit to sign both, I don't think it is a stretch. I'd get rid of Drouin anyway I could even if it's letting him go for nothing. Lehkonen, Armia and Byron are all expendable. Azner's Cap hit will be 2 million less. Who knows , Weber might even retire as his performance isn't up to his personal standards.
