I don't know if this has been floated around but here's a Friedman thought on Zac Jones. Nothing new except I hadn't seen the base salary item anywhere:
24. UMass defenceman Zac Jones, leaving school after a national championship to join the Rangers (who drafted him 68th in 2019), eschewed performance bonuses to make his route to the NHL easier on cap-tight New York. Nick Robertson and Rasmus Sandin did the same thing for Toronto, and it definitely helped them in the short term. The other factor I didn’t realize was that Jones can earn more in base salary than normal because he will be a pro for a month. Usually, an NCAA player arrives so late in the season there are only a few days of salary. (Days are also worth more this season, because there are fewer this year.) Smart all around.

Maybe it makes his trade value go down. For the right price, I'd still roll the dice here. You really need to be A+ down the middle to win the cup, we are pretty far away from that.

I was just trying to look up if a player has come back and been really good after surgery for a herniated disk in neck
looks like Letang would qualify

$10 mill cap hit /year --- you need him to PLAY to justify the $$$ |

I mean if somehow he would have season ending stuff, he'd go on LTIR. I get your concern, I just think at some point I'm ready to go all in on trying to win the cup the next few seasons. We have the trade surpluses to make a splash. We can't just make deals for the sake of making deals, but if there ever was a time where a club could really make a huge acquisition, this is it.

sure but Buffalo is selling low. Can you get them to retain 25% for a first, a player, and a prospect? the dude is injured and you never know what will happen.

Anyone else at this point. Don't want to risk giving up stuff for a guy that can come back and still be injured |

I just don't agree that we have to make some huge splash for a big name center, otherwise we have no shot at the Cup in the next few years.
I get the historical relevance of center depth. But, I would counter that our wing and defensive depth is out of the ordinary. With a strong goalie, as well.
I feel that even if we don't make a single trade (for a roster player) we will still be strong contenders, possibly even next year. |

This is where I'm at. You put a 2 way Selke type in between Panarin and Kravstov, he's gonna do exactly what the Rangers need plus wind up with 10-15 points more than his career average, so a 45 point player becomes a 55-60 point guy. That won't cost $10m. You can get that for $5m +/-. |

In a salary cap world, one of the great abilities to consider is AVAILABILITY.
I don't want a long term salary commitment to any player with that type of injury. |

There's nothing I really disagree with in your statement. I'm just saying that because of this insane depth, especially on the blue line we will be forced to move someone. Let's face it, that someone is likely not a fringe guy like Tarmo or Hajek. At that point, why not make a big splash?
I don't want to convey we make a panic trade of any sort. I'm just saying, if this isn't a time to go all in to a degree based on unprecedented depth in the club's history, when is there a time? We literally haven't had pieces like this since ironically 94, and I don't think we would make the sorts of ill advised trades that Neil did that led to our decline. It's one case in NHL history where you can have your cake and eat it too.

I can't disagree with this either, the one thing I'd point out though, is these guys would still cost a pretty penny. I mean ignoring the fact we probably wouldn't initiate a trade with the Flyers, what do you think it would take to acquire for Coots? Probably not much less than Eichel honestly.

to me, Larry Brooks column comparing the Rangers wealth of young defensemen to that of the Devils in the 90's, and then they made trades to fill the holes to win Cups in 2000 and 2003 made a lot of sense
I just don't know who I am willing to trade

This is the thing. Some guys will get traded. It's inevitable at this point. It's also inevitable that it is going to hurt to some degree.
Not sure there is a perfect path. Just have to lean on whoever stays and move on. |

LOL, I actually tend to agree with Brooks quite a bit, one reason is I think he steals a lot of his ideas from reading this blog

K'Andre Miller is approaching "Jack Eichel level" trade value
like first overall pick trade value
would people be able to handle it?
I'm not even suggesting I could handle it. |
