And especially on a 3on3. He's been trying all this sneaky release shots everywhere on the ice and that's mostly ok when it's 5v5 and you can get a crowd going and have a good chance at a rebound or a 50/50 retrieval, but 3v3? Way too much space; it's just going to be an instant turnover. - gravyface

Matthews collapsing on the puck carrier and Rielly going to him as well.
Rielly need to get his head out of his ass and learn how to play defense.
Also yes marner coughed it up. - bryant
He needs to be more vocal there, but Matthews let Gaudreau take off on him; Johnny was Matthews' man, Mo had it right, but didn't communicate well. |

The only bright spot is that you know this powerplay will turn around.
I would rather they had a prolonged horrible stretch now, and still picked up plenty of points, than suddenly have the PP evporate in the middle of the playoffs.
While this is going on though, it is pathetic. It reflects badly on this group, including the coaches. - Aetherial
The pattern suggests a 3.3% pp success rate end of April. 1.7% in May. |

Marner coughed it up for sure, but my point was it didn't cost them the game. Possession is supposed to go back and forth in 3-3. But you gotta make it count, and he didn't. But he didn't single-handedly lose them the game. I care more about the defensive cluster(frank) of all 3 guys than the loss of posession beforehand. |

Matthews wasn't getting back though, even if he did stick with his man, Gaudreau. He looked gassed.
But it all starts with Marner, trying to surprise the goalie from 40' out with his bantam wrister? Hard no. |

Campbell’s routine is getting to be just a little over the top. Reporters are prodding him for self flagellation answers. His answers last night we’re not relevant to his performance at all. - Canada Cup
Agree
It was uncomfortable to watch. It evened seemed almost too "sincere". He has to know that he didn't lose that game for them.
Leafs are sagging because they have pretty much locked down a playoff spot and I dont think they care who they play or home ice or anything.
Tampa is losing 4- tonight also, to a team battling for a spot.

I didn't get to watch the whole game, but the pieces I did see were not good. I couldn't tell if they were tired or just slow as (frank). The team wanted (and needed) more physical guys, and we got them, but we sacrificed some speed in the process and it makes it hard to watch at times. But I can't complain. Our record is good and hopefully we're more geared for "playoff hockey." |

Barrie was better on the PP, then Reilly. Reilly has a place, but it's not on the PP, he is good on rushes, that's his niche. He kills a PP, he passes and shoots weak wristers from the point . |

Possession is everything with the 3 on 3 OT's. To give it up unforced is unacceptable.
I'd love to see stats to back it up, but I'm willing to bet senseless turnovers equate to odd man rushes an absurdly high percentage of the time... And odd man rushes end an even higher percentage of 3 on 3 games. |

Special teams cost us the game, IMO. We've been lucky that hasn't bit us in the ass more often, honestly. |

Coaching staff isn't helping when they don't have to cover 1 of the players on the ice. Pretty easy. Don't cover the guy who can't shoot.
Even Marner has a better shot the Reilly |

I find his rushes are causing more harm than good as well.
Rielly seems to be the picture of forcing his game, but he always comes across as doing it to try to get on the scoresheet. As in, he doesn't give a (frank) about the ramifications of his decision making as long as his own numbers are booming. And I get that's totally opinion, there's nothing to back that up.
I feel like he's become an ugly Phaneuf/Gardiner hybrid. |

It would have if the penalty killing hadn't been so good at the same time. They've been winning it 5 on 5. I'm not worried because there's no way the PP stays on the shneid forever with this talent. |

Whats the difference in losing possession between a senseless turnover or a grade A chance that doesn't go in? I agree possession is important. I also agree Marner (frank)ed it up big time. But when you lost possession you dont give up. You defend and try and gain back possession. Then try again. They didn't defend well and it cost them. |
