I know you’re a wiener. You hide behind numbers to try and beat people down. I’m absolutely sick of it. I’m not “attached”, I’m pissed that Yzerman just kicked the can down the road another 3-5 years.
- Jeremy Laura

Hiding behind numbers that called a guy with 54 career face offs a potential long term 3c that can’t score. Calm down there super chief.

Gentlemen,

There are going to be various view-points of this trade. Wings fans are in shock right now (so is the rest of the NHL), and are trying to deal with what's gone down. Add onto the pile that the past few years have been brutal, we're going to be flummuxed by this.

PLEASE try to calm down and keep the disparaging remarks out of the discussion. It gets us nowhere and only causes unnecessary angst. & anger.

Are you high? Yzerman fleeced the Caps. Vrana may be the best player in this deal.
- LeafsPain54

Agreed

Huge win for Yzerman. Give Vrana a look on the Top PP and give him over 15 min per night playing With Larkin? He will produce.

And the picks???? Such a bonus. Yzerman has a history of getting good players late. Let’s see vasilevsky point kucherov palat cerilli. Plus Raymond and Seider coming and loads of cap space to do some shopping.

I mean, I feel you on Mantha. I'm gonna miss watching him. But.... I wont miss him missing games... nor will I miss waiting for the potential to become solid consistant effort and production.

Personally, I think this is a pretty good trade for the Wings. Adding a 1st and a 2nd, even if they are later in those rounds is still VERY useful. That's still 2 more guys in the top 64 of a class... so while yeah, it may be a couple years, they also could be solid mid 6 players...

Not to mention, Vrana and Mantha has actuall pretty similar numbers, but Vrana is about 60% of the cost, AND is still an RFA. Vrana has 157 points (76 goals) in 284 games, Mantha, 194 points (95 goals) in 302. So we are talking about a roughly 30 point difference (or 1 point every 10 career games) when extrapilated. Beyond that, Vrana is a +36 for his career, against a -26 for Mantha, now some of that is the teams they each play for, but Mantha also checked out more frequently than any of us would really like, so...

Plus, Vrana is a year and a half younger (just turned 25, Mantha turns 27 in season). Their shooting percentages are roughly even (Vrana leads 13% to 12.8% on , suggesting with an uptick in useage Vrana could still have another (though likely smaller) jump to his game. I feel like Vrana, may actually be a Fabbri 2.0, but with a much better clue defensively. I don't like the Helm comparison because he hasn't really ever been close to Vrana's production. Vrana had a 47 and a 53 point season before he turned 25, whereas Helm's career year is 33 points, and that was when he was 28!

Panik on the other hand, yeah, I agree, he's a dirty player. But some times those guys get more loveable ON your team than playing against them.

All in all though, I'm happy enough, pending a resign of Vrana, who is young enough to be a big part of the next core time line wise (I'm thinking something in the range of 4x4.75). However, if this becomes Panik, a 1st and a 2nd after this season, I'm gonna be much more sour on it.

No, I’m not high. And no, Vrana isn’t the best player in the deal. He is a grinder. He’s got some scoring touch, but he’s a 3rd line guy on a very good team
- Jeremy Laura

Vrana has 21 more goals than Mantha at even strength over the last 3 seasons. If he is a grinder Mantha is a bum.

You don’t. All you do is type stats. And “debunked” you are so full of poop. O’Reilly leaves buffalo and kills it. Just shut up, you’re kind of garbage has worn thin
- Jeremy Laura

ROR was good in Buffalo and Colorado too, I don't really get that comment at all.

You’re not wrong there.

FWIW Jeremy, I respectfully disagree with your take. As an Islanders fan, I absolutely LOATHED playing against Vrana. But only time will tell how well this deal translates, so I shall step aside and wish you and all Wings fans the best

Vrana is a Penguins-killer so I am glad to see him no longer with the Capitals, in case a Pens/Caps playoff matchup happens. Mantha is a good player but considering his contract length and the Capitals' cap situation I am still trying to figure out how this makes sense for them or even how it works.

He can be a Richard, but if there was a poll taken you'd see that most people think the Wings won this trade big time. Myself included for whatever that's worth.

I think that Vrana really benefits being a depth player in Washington. He’s got speed, and will be good for retrieval and PK. He and Mantha aren’t anything similar in playing style. The wait on even top 6 picks for Detroit has been fairly extensive. I just don’t see that we’ll know the benefit of this whole thing for 3-5 years. I wish Mantha the best, I really do. I just feel like this is another step in making the rebuild take longer

Oh The wings made off like bandits lol trust the Yzerplan. It's gonna take a few years and trading 1 player for 2 picks and another player who can potentionally be better than Mantha isn't kicking the can another 3-5 years lol

I do appreciate your take. When you take away Washington’s top 2 lines and put Vrana front and center (right now Ovi/Backstom/Oshi are the 2nd line) he’s not going to be the same player. Teams have to expend a tremendous amount of energy in shutting down the top 6. That’s how bottom 6 guys find a lot of success. Once they step into the top 6 on a very weak team where they will be focused on night in and night out, they just can’t function the same

It is, because those picks aren’t making the NHL quicker than that (in this program). Hronek broke through, but for the most part even our best picks are waiting 3 years to step in. I hope to see Seider next year. Just look down the list. Zadina has stepped up huge defensively and that’s how he grabbed a spot. Other guys, it takes that 3 to 5 year development to get into the NHL

Helm “in his prime”. Remember, CBJ offered Rick Nash for Helm and Filppula. That’s how fast and coveted DH was back in the day.

You're aware that Vrana was in the top 6 for the majority of the last 3 years in Washington.. right? Most common 5v5 line mates are Oshie, Kuzy, Backstrom with a 200 minute gap between Backstrom and Eller, Wilson, etc.

Playing top 6 won't be anything new for Vrana.

I dont even know where to start with this... Richard Panik is another Radko Gudas type of player? Hahaha, what????

Have you ever seen him play other than the one hit you referred too?

He's a solid 3rd line winger, hits, has decent hands, and is in absolutely no way even remotely close to a Radko Gudas type player.

Bad trade for Wings, but Paniks not the problem
