I do agree. Going to miss his truculence, but if Heinimen turns out and we still get a 2nd that’s not a bad return provided we use that 2nd wisely.
Dube, Anderson, and Kylington were all recent 2nds. It’s a 2022 pick so Treliving might not even be here by then.
Funny how I just watched an interview with Sutter saying how pleased he was with Sammy’s play.

It builds on trading down in the 2020 draft for more picks, to make up for what they traded away in the past. Ultimately there was mutual failure in the drafting of a high draft pick, we turned a 4th overall pick into two second rounders.

Just don't use capfriendly's arm chair GM feature as a warning to all - my anti-virus detected a trojan installation attempt on that part of their page.

I don't consider that cap space because Mangiapane and Dube are set for deserved pay raises. Get Mangiapane $3.5-4m/year on the double..pay him good so he stays here long term

Mangiapane is signed for another year but yeah he'll get a raise in 2022. Dube hasn't really shown enough to get much if any raise yet. I'm guessing they'll be looking for someone who can get a few goals with the money they're saving on Bennett.

Good analyses on Heineman prior to the 2020 draft.

Bennett was rank as high as 1st overall. No one saw that big of a dropout in his play. Team would look a lot different with Pasty on the right side. I think Burke had a big say in taking Sam.

He was exactly the kind of player that the Flames wanted. Well, he was supposed to be. Sucks that he was the highest player we ever drafted but that just goes to show that good drafting outside of the first is what makes a really good team.

I still give Tre a pass. I believe management wanted to fast-track the rebuild with the unexpected emergence of JG and Gio. If they would have spent a couple more years in the cellar collecting high-end prospects we would not be in this mess.

Letting players like Brodie walk for nothing is what stings. Sure we were going into playoffs.....but did anyone really think we had a chance?

A lesson though, is arguably to keep all of your draft picks throughout a rebuild, for youth, for speed, for cheaper contracts, and when the team does really well, then you can go ahead and trade away your future draft picks for quality established players or sign big name UFAs

Brodie - true that..

Treliving's comments certainly raised an eyebrow, when he sugar coated Sam's time in Calgary, saying they never doubted his work ethic, that Sam loved his team mates - but we saw his continual coasting all the time with our own eyes. He asked for a trade. (what else is Treliving covering up?)

He was obviously upset about something - yesterday Treliving also said the two of them talked about what could have been done differently - did Sam expect the team to trade for a quality winger just for him? I don't think a player would tell a GM "gee why didn't you let me develop in the AHL" He also complained about ice time, not getting placed on the 1st/2nd lines..Maybe Backlund, unsuspectingly - was the issue - because he prevented Bennett from getting the ice time he needed, and it's not like Monahan-Backlund give you proper 1-2 Cs

Probably not, and you have to have asset management as a prime directive. Cinderella stories do happen, but I think everyone knew that the Flames were not a real contender last year. That we got through the Jets was a surprise

Being a GM in the NHL is tough........it's tougher when you make stupid trades and picks
