If I had one word summary for the Flyers franchise, it would be: dishonesty. A failure to accept who they are. It is fitting that Comcast owns them.

1. They constantly behave as though they are NHL royalty, with their tradition and their glory and so on. Truth: they are NHL mediocrity. Not too many guys want to come here. Their record speaks for itself.

2. They always end up signing good but not great players to long term deals and sell them as stars on an -about-to-contend club: the grist for the box office mill.

3. They talk about a "bias for action": knowing full well that they are in a mess with the Voracek, Hayes, and JVR contracts and it will take years to sort out and the only action that can be taken will be changing the clothes of a sick person.

4. They constantly hype up their young players when in truth they are squarely in line of Flyers drafts: good but nothing special guys.

5. They know in their hearts and minds that the logical thing to do for future contention would be to trade Giroux and Couturier, and accept who they are now and start a rebuild. But they won't. That would be too honest and too injurious to bottom line. They will pretend this season is an anomaly. All because for 2 months (2 months!) last year they were one of the best clubs in the league.

6. They will do some absurd deal this summer and hold salary and trade prospects to get rid of Jake or JVR, possibly for say Ellis. The club will be nowhere in the ballpark of contention, but they will talk as though they are.

Agree with a lot of this. You can also add “accountability”. Fletcher said everyone will be held accountable. That is the most dishonest statement I’ve heard. Because nothing changed, the team continued a free fall....maybe putting Ghost on waivers or benching Myers was what he meant but hardly reaches the bar.

Did the Sabres get a second round pick and a roster player for a guy with 2 goals this year?
Devils got a first rounder for two players that have combined for 15 goals. Fletcher has to do something to keep up with the other bottom feeders.

- PLindbergh31

You can go through his trade history transactions and he's never made a significant acquisition, always perimeter moves. The biggest deal he's ever done is probably the trading away Brett Burns and a 2nd round pick for Charlie Coyle, Devin Setoguchi & a 2011 1st round pick (#28-Zack Phillips) deal.

Common, Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri, as meh as they've been this season, are multiple times the value of Laughton. There are probably two dozen Raffls on the trade block right now. Probably a dozen Gus' too.

Justin Williams, Sergei Bobrovsky, JVR, Patrick Sharp and Joni Pitkanen say hi. All top players on their new teams.
- Tomahawk

Except Bobovsky, NONE of those guys were the top players in their club. Williams played with Staal, then Kopitar. Sharp with Toews, Kane and Hossa. Pitkanen (ha ha ha: Carolina was one of the worst teams in the NHL during his years).

Bu then, you said in the same breath that Myers was going to be a "top notch" D and that you would be happy if he turned out to be like Coburn: an average top 4 Dman.

Make your dreams average. There is an average chance they will be fulfilled.

Place your bets, place them now!

1) Trade deadline comes and not one single move is done for the Flyers

2) Minor swap of nothing

3) Major move for the future

- Glak18

I’ll guess # 1.

Goligoski sort of made sense in February but not now. Hope they don't bother adding any of the defenseman Ek mentioned.

Edit: Fletch did bank a lot of cap space during this season....so he can take on salary to help another team make a deal....seen that happen a couple of times in the last 24 hours...does that count?

The Chuck Fletcher presser and the Dave Scott interview bothered me. Their talk seemed to suggest that this is fundamentally a good club and needs tweaking.

I wish the Flyers fan base was like the Sixers. Everyone tuned out during the epic tanking/rebuild, which is the longest of all sports franchises in history. Arena used to be 25% full. That tuning out gave the club the space to build. They were lucky enough to get owned by dudes who played the long game.

I am as bad as any. When a Flyers game is on, it is hard for me to forget about it.

They couldn't do it in their prime, how would an extra 40 lbs change that?

Remember when everyone would complain about Snider being too involved and (frank)ing things up? Bet those people wish he was still alive. This organization as we knew it died with him.

When Snider died, the Cup drought was already at 41 years. It's gotten worse since he died, but it's basically same poop, different decade.

Yes but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Really that’s all you can ask for. Only one team wins the cup. Some misfortune went into that drought as well.

Snider was as bad as any. He always struck me as excessively loyal and excessively impatient.

If there was any redeeming feature, it might be that his mistakes stemmed from too much heart and not too much head.

No.

This team still has Snyder DNA.

Wholesale change is needed.

Idk how anyone looks at this franchise and doesn’t think it’s time for a rebuild. Salary cap has been around how long now. Still running things like you can just draft in the middle of the pack and buy your way out of everything else.

The drought is real but at least they were always in the fight, they went to the finals in 1976-1980-1985-1987-1997-2010, they were seemingly alway in the heat of it. There's just a different vibe now, too corporate.
