I have encountered this as well. It's unbelievable.
Some people have a natural instinct to think they are smarter than then everyone else(a head of the curve" so to speak, because as you said they "read it on the internet"
Its so important to always check the source of the story and even then creditable ones can be cryptic.
I guess it a curse of the internet.

as I said before, I think these conspiracy theories have sadly become a coping mechanism for a lot of people, because they don't know how to react to the circumstances.
